Jacob Atem and his cousin were tending to cattle the evening their village was attacked in Sudan. As they went about their chores, Atem saw his village engulfed in flames. He and his cousin ran into the desert.

MSU goes green in new course on sustainability

A class being offered in spring 2009 will help keep students going green long after they graduate. The course, NSC 491, section 001, will be an introduction to sustainability studies, said Terry Link, director of the Office of Campus Sustainability.

Obama takes on McCain

During his second visit to Michigan in about two weeks, Barack Obama spoke with a renewed vigor at a town hall meeting Monday, even as John McCain gained ground in the presidential race. A Gallup poll released Monday revealed that McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona, had a five-point lead after last week’s Republican National Convention. Most other polls show the candidates in a dead heat or McCain leading. Obama, a U.S. senator from Illinois, told the audience at North Farmington High School much of McCain’s success has been based on false accusations against him.

Web site informs public of MSU's environmental efforts

A green Web site is helping to raise awareness about MSU’s efforts to create a sustainable campus. Ecofoot, launched in 1999, is the Web site of the Office of Campus Sustainability and the University Committee for a Sustainable Campus, said Terry Link, director of the office.

City Council talks Historic District

The East Lansing City Council will discuss whether it needs to modify part of its Historic District at its work session tonight. The work session is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Conference Room A of City Hall, 410 Abbot Road.

Big Ten cities plan similar development projects

East Lansing isn’t the only Big Ten town looking to give residents a better view of its skyline. Madison, Wis., home of the University of Wisconsin, and Ann Arbor are pursuing development projects similar to East Lansing’s City Center II, which calls for the creation of a 10-story building along Abbot Road and Grand River Avenue.

Violinists perform for master

Eric Olson’s mind went blank as he climbed the stage steps and took his place inside the stream of light falling from the auditorium’s rafters. The first-year MSU music performance graduate student twisted the knobs of his violin before standing silent. A moment later, he slid the bow across the strings.

Home football games benefit some E.L. shops

As the MSU football team reeled off touchdowns during its first home game Saturday, local business owners said they also scored big. Home football contests traditionally bring tailgaters, students and out-of-town visitors to local restaurants and retailers before and after the game.

Colleges tap into Facebook to issue alerts

While MSU implemented a text message alert system last year to warn students of emergencies, other universities also are using technology in the name of campus safety. Last month, the University of Maryland at College Park started a Facebook.com group for students to receive emergency information, talk with each other about emergencies and share information with family.
