MSU's gardens among best in the U.S.

MSU's W.J. Beal Botanical Garden and Hidden Lake Gardens have both been ranked by Best Colleges Online among the "50 Most Amazing University Botanical Gardens and Arboretums in the U.S." The rankings and ratings for each garden were assessed on a points system which awarded gardens for not only having a wide and manicured variety of plant species, but also for categories such as previous awards won, conservation and education, having a connected university degree program and 'Wow' factors. Fireworks in East Lansing under strict regulation over holiday weekend

Those looking to discharge fireworks this Fourth of July should be cognizant of East Lansing's fireworks ordinances, East Lansing police Lt. Steve Gonzalez said. According to East Lansing city ordinance, fireworks may only be discharged on the day before, day of and day after a national holiday. And even on those days, fireworks may not be discharged between the hours of 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. Violation of this ordinance may result in a $500 fine.

Student Housing Cooperative looking to expand

The Michigan State University Student Housing Cooperative is currently in the process of buying two new properties to create a new student housing co-op. Holly Jo Sparks, the executive director of the Student Housing Cooperative said they have signed an offer sheet and now will begin the process of getting approval of the City of East Lansing to turn the buildings into a new co-op that will house at least 17 people.

Ingham County Clerk extends hours following marriage equality ruling

Earlier today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a historic ruling which allows same-sex couples to marry and ensured equal respect for their marriages across America. Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum issued a statement extending the office's hours today to implement marriage equality, adding that she will keep the office open until the last person is served.

Tobacco-free policy more educational than punitive

With the Board of Trustees decision last week to institute a new tobacco-free policy at MSU, a few aspects of the policy have yet to be ironed out before it is eventually implemented August of 2016. However, MSU spokesperson Jason Cody said the policy will be geared toward education rather than be punitive in nature.
