How MSU researchers unlocked a fingerprint-secure smartphone to help police with homicide case

In the early hours of Saturday, May 14, 2016, 34-year-old Joshua Christopher Misiak was driving his brother’s vehicle when he and an unidentified 22-year-old woman were shot near the intersection of Kendon Drive and Wildwood Avenue in Lansing. At the hospital, Misiak, a father of two daughters, was pronounced dead due to multiple gunshot wounds. Police say another vehicle pulled up and began shooting shortly after 1:00 a.m.

Sparticipation cancelled, rescheduling possibly in the works

What was supposed to be the MSU’s historically largest Sparticipation was in full swing—students were eating their cookout dinners, obtaining “swag” from RSOs on campus, and music was blaring from the center of Cherry Lane Field. And then, less than half an hour after the much anticipated event began, it was cancelled.

Chinese students reflect on tobacco ban

Chinese international students are embracing the new tobacco-free campus.  A 2015 study published in a UK medical journal found that two-thirds of all males in China smoked and that more were picking up the habit as teenagers.

Now in its 14th year, the event has become a popular way for students to pick up any last items they need before classes start, gain exposure to the transportation systems available to them and meet fellow Spartans.

Trump to give campaign speech nearby on Friday

Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump will be coming near Lansing for a campaign speech on Friday, according to a campaign schedule. The event will be in Dimondale, Mich., about 20 minutes away, and will take place at The Summit Sports and Ice Complex. The event will begin at 2 p.m. Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is currently 10 points ahead of Trump, according to the latest WXYZ-TV/Detroit Free Press poll released Aug.

MSU closes Women's Lounge and resource center in compliance with Title IX, students fight back

The news of MSU closing the women’s study lounge in the Union and reopening it as an all-gender study lounge has many students upset and wondering “why?” and most importantly, “why now?” According to MSU spokesman Jason Cody, there were several factors that contributed to the decision of closing the lounge. Complaints and Title IX “There were concerns expressed previously, both on campus and from individuals, such as, Mr. Perry,” Cody said. UM-Flint Professor Mark Perry filed a civil rights complaint against MSU on July 7 regarding the women’s-only study lounge, which is what brought the issue to light. “As those concerns were expressed, and our Title IX office continued to look at the situation over the past year or so, we also had our General Counsel take another look from a legal standpoint, specifically in light of Title IX,” Cody said. All of those discussions culminated in the decision to convert the women’s study lounge to an all-gender study lounge. MSU was under investigation in September 2015 on behalf of the U.S.
