The Michigan House Democratic Caucus unanimously elected state Representative-elect Dianne Byrum House Democratic leader Friday, marking her the first woman to hold the position in the state’s government.Byrum, D-Onondaga, was elected to the House last week after term limits forced her to relinquish her seat in the state Senate.

Construction begins on new fire station

Lansing - Community leaders and Lansing area residents gathered Thursday at a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new Lansing fire station located off East Miller Road in south Lansing.The $1.75 million station will be the second that will be funded through voter-approved bond initiatives.

3 face charges

Three MSU students were arraigned Wednesday after police discovered a pound of marijuana and other drugs in their East Lansing home.The students charged were Michael Puretz, 20; Adam Vielea, 21; and Ryan Webster, 20.

Station organizes donations

When Mojo spotted Samantha Janes approaching the school bus with a bag of food, a DJ for WWDX (92.1-FM), The Edge, sprinted to her, embracing her in a bear hug. “I try to meet everyone who donates,” Mojo said, pointing to the school bus bearing signs for the radio station - the official collection spot for the “Stuff the Bus 2002” campaign. Janes, a history senior, finished shopping at Goodrich’s Shop-Rite, 940 Trowbridge Road, and walked across the parking lot to the school bus to donate some food for the campaign, which began at 6 a.m.

Jeffries is winner in close Lansing race

After a tight race for the single open Lansing City Council seat, Brian Jeffries rose as the winner early Wednesday morning. The 47-year-old ASMSU Legal Services attorney won 14,480 Lansing votes, or 51 percent, over Kathy Pelleran’s 13,752 votes, or 49 percent.

Bernero wins seat; DeWeese reflects

Although Paul DeWeese lost to Virg Bernero in Tuesday’s 23rd District state Senate race, he remains optimistic about the community’s involvement in politics.The two state representatives faced off in pursuit of the senate seat currently held by term-limited Dianne Byrum, D-Onondaga.

Author discusses 'Banned Books'

Ken Wachsberger's first political arrest was in 1970 as part of an MSU protest - after 32 years, a published book series and many more protests, he continues to fight for the freedom to read. Wachsberger, the editor of a book set on banned books, was surrounded by challenged paperbacks at the East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbott Road, as part of East Lansing's One Book, One Community program Monday night. "The First Amendment is America's most precious gift in the world," he said.

Candidate pursues donation tax credit

A proposal by state Rep. Paul DeWeese could bring enough funds to MSU to help the school reach its $1.2 billion fund-raising goal, but critics say the proposal is untimely with next year’s budget woes. DeWeese’s proposal would add a new section to the Michigan tax code to provide a tax credit to individuals and corporations contributing to the endowment funds of state institutions of higher learning.
