Resources help first-time tax filers

This is the first year communication senior Kristi Buckham has filed her taxes on her own. As the April 15 tax filing deadline approaches, local tax preparers are getting the word out about the number of resources available to filers, including local tax-preparation services, resources and Web sites devoted to do-it-yourself filing. And, like Buckham, many college students will file as independents for the first time. Buckham said she used an online tax preparation site because it was simple to use and inexpensive.

Several tear-gas injuries reported

Several injuries were reported after thousands of students took to the streets following the Spartans' loss to North Carolina on Saturday. At Lansing's Sparrow Hospital emergency room, between 15 and 20 students were treated and released, said Nan Simons, spokeswoman for Sparrow Hospital. Students were treated for twisted ankles, bumps and bruises and exposure to tear gas and similar chemicals.

Automobile connoisseur and collector Wade Leonard of Clinton Township flipped open his wallet Wednesday inside Archives Book Shop to show off his baby - a 1922 Ford Model T. The 65-year-old social studies teacher spent the afternoon scouring the shelves for old Ford Motor Co. advertisements. But Leonard is not a dealer.

Water main breaks within Capitol Loop

The Capitol was closed for about six hours Wednesday after a water main broke on Allegan Street. A contractor working on the Capitol Loop reconstruction project hit a water main with a piece of excavating equipment shortly after 7:30 a.m., said John Strickler, spokesman for the Lansing Board of Water & Light. It took about three hours to fix, Strickler said.

Group submits mourning dove petition

Since last June, when Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed the bill to allow mourning dove hunting in Michigan, the Committee to Restore the Dove Shooting Ban has been working to reverse the law. The committee submitted more than 275,000 petition signatures to the Michigan Bureau of Elections on Monday.

The East Village Planning Team isn't quite done defining their master plan. Although the group assembled Tuesday, it did not vote on the plan, stating it was still incomplete. "We are getting to the point when we would have a polished plan," said Jim van Ravensway, East Lansing planning and community development director.
