Census Road Tour will stop in E.L.

The Census Road Tour Celebration will make a stop at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ann Street Plaza in downtown East Lansing and will bring giveaways, free food, a DJ and surprise celebrity guests. The event, which lasts until 10 p.m., is part of the U.S.

Fundraiser helps to pay families' bills

A fundraiser hosted by the Lansing Board of Water & Light on March 4 collected more than $7,500 to help pay the utility bills of area families who are struggling to make the payments. BWL customers contribute nearly $40,000 every year to the event, which is known as Pennies for Power.

Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charizard, oh my!

Twenty-year-old David Broker has about 100,000 Pokémon trading cards at his home in Colon, Mich. Broker was one of 70 entrants in the “masters” division at Saturday’s 2010 Michigan Pokémon Trading Card Game State Championships held at the Okemos Conference Center, 2187 University Park Drive. Masters include participants who were born before 1994 or are older than 16.

Michigan cities could see revenue sharing increase in 2010

Although the Michigan House Appropriations Committee recommended increasing statutory revenue sharing by 1 percent Thursday, East Lansing officials are uncertain whether the vital local government funding source will escape the chopping block when the Legislature sets its budget in October. Revenue sharing refers to cities getting a refund from the state in exchange for letting the state collect sales, weight and gas taxes.

Crime Stoppers to hold fundraiser Monday

Crime Stoppers of Mid-Michigan is holding a fundraiser from 8-10 p.m. Monday at Harpers Restaurant & Brewpub, 131 Albert Ave. Crime Stoppers is a nonprofit organization that raises award money for people who give anonymous tips that lead to the capture of criminals. The organization is volunteer-run and is paid for by donations said Crime Stoppers President Joel Maatman.

Granholm declares "Meatout day"

Gov. Jennifer Granholm might have bit off more than she could chew when she declared Saturday Michigan Meatout Day. Many MSU agriculture students and agribusiness advocates found the proclamation thoughtless and insensitive.

Event to celebrate pets this weekend

The College of Veterinary Medicine will honor more than 50 pets at the annual “Celebration of Life” event from 1-4 p.m., Saturday in the college’s Oncology Center, on Wilson Road. The celebration will honor pets that faced life threatening situations, as well as their owners and veterinarians, according to a statement from MSU.

MSU, E.L. select program book

The city of East Lansing and MSU announced that “Zeitoun,” by Dave Eggers, will be the 2010 One Book, One Community selection. The book follows the true story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a Syrian man struggling with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Tasty Twist reopens with local support

Tasty Twist opened this week at its new 1137 E. Grand River Ave. location, after the East Lansing ice cream staple was ousted from its home since 1957 at 1307 E. Grand River Ave. by the property owner. Owner Scott King was told in November by property owners that they planned to tear down his soft serve shop to expand the adjacent Citgo gas station. He obliged, but not long after, East Lansing Tasty Treat moved into Tasty Twist’s former location.

EPA plans to limit coal emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency released a proposal in January to decrease the primary limit of ozone emissions allowed to between 0.060 parts per million, or ppm, and 0.070 ppm — standards that the Lansing area might have problems reaching

Betty Allen said she never experienced anything as wonderful as the kindness shown to her by some MSU students. Two groups of 12 MSU students painted the 72-year-old New Orleans resident’s home during an Alternative Spring Break, or ASB, trip.

Local salons donate money to help Haiti

The Douglas J Salon of East Lansing, along with other Mid-Michigan branches of Douglas J Salons, eXchanges and Aveda Institutes, helped raise more than $3,200 during February to support the victims of the Haiti earthquake. The salons encouraged guests to make donations at checkout.

Meadows proposes term limit changes

State Rep. Mark Meadows, D-East Lansing, wants to change the way lawmakers do business. Meadows recently proposed various ideas to reform state government, including reforms of state legislators’ term limits, slashing business tax credits and lowering the state’s sales tax and expanding it to services.
