Week in Review: July 24, 2015
The final candiates for the East Lansing City Council are in, although as of Friday at noon the candidates have four hours to withdraw from the race. Current East Lansing Mayer Nathan Triplett is trying again for mayor and the other candidates are Mark Meadows, a former councilmember, East Lansing resident and MSU professor Erik Altmaan, MSU graduate Shanna Draheim, MSU professor emeritus John Revitte, 2008 MSU graduate Steve Ross and 2007 MSU graduate Jermain Ruffin. Seven candidates have filed to run for three vacancies, and council members Kathleen Boyle and Diane Goddeeris will not be seeking reelection.

Shanna Draheim, a Southern California native, fell in love with East Lansing during her undergrad years at MSU. After bringing her family to live in and be part of the community 11 years ago, Draheim has decided to run for East Lansing City Council.

A 23-year-old male international student taking summer classes at MSU was assaulted on his walk back from Harper's Restaurant and Brew Pub early July 10 at 1:30 a.m., MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

With both Eastern Michigan University and Oakland University raising tuition above the 3.2 percent state tuition cap, MSU could gain some additional state aid, according to an MSU spokesperson.

Eron Harris arrest report reveals blood alcohol content above legal limit
On July 1, MSU basketball player and junior guard Eron Harris was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and blew a 0.12 blood alcohol content on a breathalyzer test, according to the police report obtained by The State News.

A full, two-week road closure of Abbott Road between Saginaw Street and Whitehills Drive will begin Monday, July 20, for construction of an ongoing major street project, according to a city statement.

Former MSU employee convicted of embezzlement ordered to repay MSU
Brandi Eileen Moody, the former MSU employee who had previously been convicted of embezzling as much as $143,000 from MSU, was sentenced tofive years of probation and to pay a restitution of $43,000 to MSU. She has already paid back $100,000 of the money.
