Current events have not been kind to police departments across the country. Even in East Lansing, police have not escaped the ire of activists on either side of Grand River Avenue. Because police are often viewed as a homogeneous group rather than an amalgamation of different departments with varying levels of funding and training, the lines have sometimes become blurred.

Born amidst the protests sparked over the shooting of Trayvon Martinch and death of Freddie Gray in police custody, Black Lives Matter is described as “a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society.”chOne student organization at MSU, the Black Student Alliance (BSA), has been active in holding rallies, organizing events, staging protests and advocating for the goals of the Black Lives Matter movement.
