Free fishing weekend encourages new fishers
As a way to promote appreciation and conservation of Michigan’s outdoors, the Department of Natural Resources, or DNR, is hosting the state’s annual summer Free Fishing Weekend Saturday and Sunday. The DNR has held two separate free fishing weekends every year since 1986, the second being in February, said Lynne Thoma, departmental technician with the DNR.

Number of rabid animals growing in Mich.
The number of rabid animals in Michigan has been increasing annually, resulting in raised awareness on the potentially fatal disease. Last year Ingham County had more reported rabid animals than any other county in Michigan with 29 animals.

E.L. residents donate items to reuse
The Abbott Center’s parking lot was filled with what many think of as trash on Saturday, and for organizers of East Lansing’s Project Pride, that was a sign of another successful year. Project Pride, held at 1400-1500 Abbot Road, is an annual cleanup event where residents bring their household items to be recycled or reused. Some of the items accepted included usable furniture, scrap metal and cardboard.

Campus conservation
Leaving a harsh environmental footprint isn’t difficult on a more than 5,000-acre campus. But, to help combat the toll the university takes on its surroundings, MSU is beginning an environmental stewardship program this summer that will continue throughout the school year. The program is looking at lowering ecological waste in two ways: Reducing energy consumption on campus and reducing the amount of materials the university sends to landfills, said Kathy Lindahl, assistant vice president for finance and operations.
