Award-winning playwright speaks with MSU students

Suzan-Lori Parks, author of various plays, such as the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Topdog/Underdog,” came to MSU on Tuesday to discuss her works and career before a crowd of about 300. In 2002, Parks became the first African-American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in drama for her play.

Poetry festival offers creative experiences

Courtney Hilden spends about four hours of her week with the likes of Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Ann Plato and Frances Harper — a lost generation of female poets of whom most in the world of academia have never heard. Hilden, however, thinks these women still have a story to tell and a part to play. The English senior will give a presentation on her senior thesis this month — a study of 19th century politically active women poets — as a part of the Center for Poetry’s Spring Poetry Festival.

Event aims to address different forms of oppression

It is similar to a haunted house, except the realities students will face inside the Tunnel of Oppression are far scarier than monsters and ghosts. The Tunnel of Oppression, a performance meant to address various types of oppression found throughout the world, will be performed at 6, 7 and 8 p.m.

Trivia tournament kicks off Geek Week

Trivial Pursuit questions tested the general knowledge and pop culture skills of MSU Honors College members in Eustace-Cole Hall’s upper lounge as the gamers participated in the Geek Week kickoff event Monday night.

Food writer to speak next week

Author and food writer Michael Pollan will discuss the challenges facing the American food system with MSU students from 3-4 p.m. Monday in Room C-102 in Wilson Hall. Pollan is the featured speaker at the World View Series presented by Wharton Center. He is the Knight Professor of Journalism at the University of California-Berkeley.

Melting Moments to seek new location

After 26 years in its 313 E. Grand River Ave. home, Melting Moments’ owner has closed its retail operation to focus on its vending sales. Owner Mark Geovjian said a physical store didn’t make financial sense, adding the place was too large for the small share of company’s business it provided.

A burrow for donated books

The Book Burrow in the basement of the Downtown Lansing Library started out small when it opened in the 1970s. It slowly expanded and now has more than 2,000 square feet of floor space containing more than 70,000 books.

Clean Energy Forum to be held Saturday

Focus the Nation, Global Exchange and the Will Steger Foundation will hold the Michigan Clean Energy Forum from 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday in Wonders Hall Kiva. A professional environmental panel will discuss the state of Michigan’s energy policies, focusing on job creation.

Health up for debate on campus

Representatives on the Student Health Alliance Board created the One Health Symposium to bring students together with faculty and experts in fields from public health policy to business in medicine. The event will begin at 9:15 a.m. Saturday in Room 184 of the Radiology Building.

Festive horse show offers family fun

MSU hosted the Michigan Quarter Horse Association’s, or MQHA, Easter Eggstravaganza show from Thursday to Sunday in the Pavilion’s arena, exhibit area and auditorium. More than 300 competitors and a total of about 1,500 people, including family members and trainers, attended this year’s event.

MSU students protest canceled prom

MSU students participated in a nationwide event Friday by wearing formal clothing to protest a Mississippi high school canceling prom because Constance McMillen, a lesbian student at the school, requested to bring her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.
