Council rejects size increase of cell phone tower
Thunderous applause arose from about 40 East Lansing residents after their City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted to reject a leading cellular phone company's proposal to double the size of one of its city towers. Nextel Communications submitted an application at the council meeting to revamp an existing cell phone tower, located on top of the Alton Street water tower in Patriarche Park. The communication company's lawyer, Randall Reaves, said the new tower would include an air conditioning unit, a 24 kilowatt generator and would increase radio signals, allowing the company to carry more calls.
