The Ingham County Animal Control & Shelter’s third annual 30 Hour Pet Adopt-A-Thon on Saturday and Sunday was aimed at raising awareness for the significant number of homeless and abused animals. The shelter takes in more than 4,000 animals each year.

The fate of two lots located on Louis Street has become more certain with the demolition of two century-old houses Monday. The Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau is hosting the 16th annual “Be a Tourist in Your Own Town” event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. For $1, participants can purchase a “passport” that grants them free admission to more than 50 Greater Lansing attractions and activities. For an extra 50 cents, participants will receive a stamp that allows them to ride the CATA bus system throughout the day.
New decorative danglers likely will hang beneath the banners that line the streets of East Lansing. The Downtown Management Board, or DMB, will offer danglers for sale to East Lansing businesses due to merchant interest. The program began May 15, permitting downtown businesses to purchase danglers that hang underneath the “City of the Arts” and “Holiday” banners displayed during the summer and winter months.
The 15th annual Board of Water and Light Chili Cook-Off will take place from 5-9 p.m. Friday, in Lansing, at Adado Riverfront Park. Chili recipes from restaurants and organizations in the Lansing area will be judged in the competition and have a chance to win the People’s Choice Award, which is voted on by the attendees.
The MSU Horticulture Gardens 2010 Plant Sale will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the MSU Plant and Soil Sciences Building. A new event in East Lansing, will take participants through downtown East Lansing, is set to take place June 12. Dirty Feat is an urban adventure race consisting of teams of two competing in challenges, which include running, biking and orienteering.

In a move that could tip the scales in the 2010 gubernatorial race, the Michigan Education Association, or MEA, announced Friday that it is endorsing Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, a Democrat, for Michigan’s next governor. The MEA is an East Lansing-based labor union that represents more than 157,000 teachers and education support staff throughout the state.
Peanut butter and jelly is one of three new flavors recently released at the dairy store in Anthony Hall. The other newcomers are turtle sundae — a butter chocolate swirl with chocolate-covered pecans — and Omer Tracks, which is malted ice cream with chopped M&M’s and chocolate-covered waffle cone pieces, named for the raccoon mascot from Odyssey of the Mind, which was hosted May 26-29 at MSU.

Community members participated in a bowling fundraiser Saturday at Marvel Lanes, 2120 E. M-78 Highway in East Lansing. An estimated $400 was raised for the mission trip, entitled Mission for Mercy, sponsored by Healthcare Ministries. Mission for Mercy trip members will travel August 20-31 to the Republic of Cameroon, Africa to help provide health care for impoverished residents.
