Ed Noonan, a volunteer faculty member in the MSU College of Law Rental Housing Clinic, died Friday after a heart attack following a shoulder replacement surgery, close friend Lenny Provencher said. He was 67.
Consumer confidence still is low compared to past years, but the numbers show signs of improvement, according to a survey by economics professor Charles Ballard. Out of the 991 people between the ages of 18 to 95 surveyed, 32 of whom were age 25 or under, 54 percent felt they were worse off compared to one year ago. Although Ballard said the number might look bad on paper, it is the lowest since 2007.
Cultural de las Razas Unidas hosted its 15th annual Latin Xplosion “Carnival” Friday at the Auditorium for more than 500 students. The cultural show consisted of 14 acts including singing, dancing, poetry, a band and several fashion shows.
About 5,000 volunteers from 33 different churches came together to distribute almost 3,000 boxes of food to families across Greater Lansing as part of the Church of Greater Lansing’s Food Drop 2010. The Church of Greater Lansing is a network of churches in the Lansing area, and most are Christian denominations.
Seven female MSU students competed for the title of Miss Michigan State on Friday at the Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road. Five judges, including guest judge Tom Herzog, a junior center from the MSU men’s basketball team, scored the contestants based on their talent performance, a two-question interview and service to the community.
A new joint 911 call center is being re-examined by the city of East Lansing. The contract for the new call center, which will consolidate the two current 911 centers into one, is being contested by city officials from East Lansing. City Manager Ted Staton said the city is upset because Ingham County officials are asking the city to pay pension costs for former workers — a cost the county used to carry.
New legislation proposed in a Michigan Senate committee would require health insurance providers to cover testing for human papillomavirus, or HPV. Insurance providers would be required to cover the HPV test, which exposes a virus that is linked to cervical cancer, under a two-bill package sponsored by state Sen. Martha Scott, D-Highland Park.

A bill introduced in the Michigan House of Representatives on Wednesday that would revive the Michigan Promise Scholarship as a forgivable loan is receiving mixed reactions from students and state lawmakers. The bill, introduced by state Rep. Jase Bolger, R-Marshall, would reinstate the Michigan Promise Scholarship as a forgivable loan with the requirement that recipients stay in Michigan for five years after graduation.
The city of East Lansing will not receive the $25 million it requested from a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, grant to renovate the Amtrak station on Harrison Road. The grant would have upgraded the Amtrak facility and created a public parking structure, a project which city officials view as essential to redeveloping the Trowbridge corridor.
In the 2009-10 academic year, the number of undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in MSU’s College of Nursing increased by 1.9 percent, according to data from the Office of the Registrar. Enrollment in the college climbed by a smaller percentage in 2010 than was seen in previous years, following a national slowing in the eight-year boom of enrollment in nursing programs.
MSU increased its minority student enrollment by more than 100 students between 2008 and 2009. The Diversity and Inclusion Annual Progress Report showed a slight increase in the number of minority students enrolled at MSU.
Susan J. Bandes, director of Kresge Art Museum, will step down from the position May 1, according to a statement from MSU. Bandes is expected to pursue teaching at MSU while she remains a full-time professor for the Department of Art and Art History.
A plan to replace the Michigan Promise Scholarship as a forgivable loan was introduced Wednesday in the state House of Representatives. House Bill 5849, proposed by state Rep. Jase Bolger, R-Marshall, would grant students the Michigan Promise Scholarship as a loan with the requirement that they stay in Michigan for five years after graduation.
