Locals asked to be Lansing tourists

The Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau is hosting the 16th annual “Be a Tourist in Your Own Town” event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. For $1, participants can purchase a “passport” that grants them free admission to more than 50 Greater Lansing attractions and activities. For an extra 50 cents, participants will receive a stamp that allows them to ride the CATA bus system throughout the day.

E.L. offers danglers for area businesses

New decorative danglers likely will hang beneath the banners that line the streets of East Lansing. The Downtown Management Board, or DMB, will offer danglers for sale to East Lansing businesses due to merchant interest. The program began May 15, permitting downtown businesses to purchase danglers that hang underneath the “City of the Arts” and “Holiday” banners displayed during the summer and winter months.

Chili recipes battle head to head Friday

The 15th annual Board of Water and Light Chili Cook-Off will take place from 5-9 p.m. Friday, in Lansing, at Adado Riverfront Park. Chili recipes from restaurants and organizations in the Lansing area will be judged in the competition and have a chance to win the People’s Choice Award, which is voted on by the attendees.

MSU Hort. Plant Sale to be held Saturday

The MSU Horticulture Gardens 2010 Plant Sale will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the MSU Plant and Soil Sciences Building. The annual sale includes hundreds locally-grown herbs, vegetable transplants, annuals, perennials and ornamental grasses, with prices varying from about $1 to $100.

Dirty Feat to host outdoor challenge

A new event in East Lansing, will take participants through downtown East Lansing, is set to take place June 12. Dirty Feat is an urban adventure race consisting of teams of two competing in challenges, which include running, biking and orienteering.

Bernero gains support of Michigan teachers

In a move that could tip the scales in the 2010 gubernatorial race, the Michigan Education Association, or MEA, announced Friday that it is endorsing Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, a Democrat, for Michigan’s next governor. The MEA is an East Lansing-based labor union that represents more than 157,000 teachers and education support staff throughout the state.

Dairy Store unveils new flavors

Peanut butter and jelly is one of three new flavors recently released at the dairy store in Anthony Hall. The other newcomers are turtle sundae — a butter chocolate swirl with chocolate-covered pecans — and Omer Tracks, which is malted ice cream with chopped M&M’s and chocolate-covered waffle cone pieces, named for the raccoon mascot from Odyssey of the Mind, which was hosted May 26-29 at MSU.

Bowling event raises funds for Mission for Mercy

Community members participated in a bowling fundraiser Saturday at Marvel Lanes, 2120 E. M-78 Highway in East Lansing. An estimated $400 was raised for the mission trip, entitled Mission for Mercy, sponsored by Healthcare Ministries. Mission for Mercy trip members will travel August 20-31 to the Republic of Cameroon, Africa to help provide health care for impoverished residents.

Virtuosi spring concert provides hope

The MSU Community Music School auditorium was filled Thursday night with classic melodies and the work of the Okemos and Spartan Virtuosi Strings violinists. The Spring Virtuosi Concert has been held after each semester for the past 30 years, and violin and viola instructor Susanne Garber, who has been teaching for 20 years, said it was a great opportunity for young students to learn the art of violin and viola.

A $65 ticket might be the least of some students’ troubles as area officers stepped up patrol this past weekend and plan to continue during the week ahead in multiple enforcement zones for Michigan’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which runs May 24 through Sunday.

MSU, MIT research alternative fuel

An MSU professor is a part of a team examining the practicality of an alternative liquid fuel that could eventually replace gasoline. The group is receiving $1.7 million from the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy to design a reactor to test a microorganism’s production of new fuels.

A rally to stand against the Eagle Mine Project, a potential copper and nickel mine in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, will be held at 11 a.m. The opponents of the mine project believe it will unnecessarily damage the environment.

Breakfast event to benefit homeless

The annual Pancakes in the Park event hosted by the East Lansing Rotary Club will take place 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event brought in a record 1,500 people in 2009 in efforts to raise money for several nonprofit organizations, including Haven House, which is an organization that provides housing and support services for homeless families with children.

State Juneteenth holiday to be held

Michigan’s sixth annual celebration of Juneteenth will feature various festivities and entertainment June 17-19 in Lansing. Juneteenth, or June 19, recognizes the announcement of slavery’s abolition in Texas in 1865. The celebration in Michigan will begin at 11:30 a.m. June 17 at the Capitol Building with the annual State Holiday Legislative Luncheon Program.

Prisoners discuss jail life with kids, families at Lansing event

An interactive discussion between prisoners and Lansing-area residents took place at Lansing Community College, or LCC, on Thursday, highlighting the importance of education and personal responsibility. Area families and their children attended the Breaking the Cycle of Incarceration event Thursday at LCC’s Dart Auditorium.

Potential gas tax hike could help state, anger students

Doubling the state gas tax and vehicle registration fees ultimately might cost Michigan citizens less, according to a May 13 study by the East Lansing-based research organization Anderson Economic Group. Road congestion currently costs each person about $287 each year in wasted gas and time, and in the near future, poor road conditions could cost the state some 12,000 jobs.
