The College of Human Medicine has introduced two scholarships to support students with a passion for serving indigenous communities. The scholarships have added to the college's Indigenous Pathway program.
On Thursday, Oct. 12 at 5 p.m., Students United for Palestinian Rights, or SUPR, organized a protest called “Hands Off Palestine” to garner support for those in Palestine and tell Michigan’s state government there should be no American support for Israeli war crimes. The protest, which amassed over one hundred people, included Michigan State University students, members of SUPR, people of Palestinian descent and other supporters.
Disability Employment Awareness recognizes workers with disabilities and how they contribute to the workforce. This month also brings awareness to highlight the hardships that these workers face and the hard work they present.
With the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence, or AI, rapidly evolving each day, many people have expressed uncertainty over whether the technological development will take away the need for jobs in many industries, such as computer science and even healthcare. For Michigan State University journalism professor and Communications, Graduate Assistant Dean Esther Thorson, there’s no question that jobs within the writing industry will be lost because of AI.
The Alpha Phi Beta Beta sorority received a historical marker from the state of Michigan, recognizing the sorority as the first women's organization at MSU. The sorority's roots trace back to 1891 when a group of 17 women started the Feronian Society.
“We condemn the recent acts of violence and share the concern of many in our community regarding the staggering loss of life in Israel and Gaza,” MSU's statement reads. “MSU strongly opposes hate, bigotry, antisemitism and Islamophobia and the way these may manifest into fear and violence.”
On Aug. 17, a handful of MSU students were notified that either their social security numbers or MSU IDs had been stolen due to a large cybersecurity attack in June.
For students unfamiliar with the Michigan State University's campus and surrounding areas, finding a go-to-eatery can be a daunting task. This is something MSU's Food Critic Club aims to improve.
Their silence leaves much unclear, including who is and isn’t complying with the investigation, how long it will take, how much it will cost, how the findings will be delivered and if the results will ever be made public at all.
On Monday, members of the North American Indigenous Student Organization, or NAISO, painted the Rock with the message, "WE ARE STILL HERE" for Indigenous Peoples' Day. At midnight on Tuesday, the Students United for Palestinian Rights, or SUPR, painted the Michigan State University Rock with the Palestinian flag. Later, the message, "Free Palestine" was painted on top. Linguistics senior and SUPR President Samir Levitt said SUPR kept NAISO's original message because the struggles of Indigenous North Americans and Palestinians are "one and the same."
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, commonly referred to as PCOS, is estimated to affect five to six million women in the United States. When acne popped up, and facial hair started randomly appearing on her chin, 23-year-old Dearborn resident Zeinab Khattab had no idea what was going on but knew something was off. "I think one of the main issues is that a lot of these symptoms are often chalked up to just being regular 'woman issues,'" Khattab said. 'Rather than it being a serious medical concern."
The Michigan State Medical Society Alliance hosted an event to highlight the voices of those affected by the mass shooting on MSU campus on Feb. 13. Sparrow Hospital President Denny Martin spoke on the swift healthcare response and the ongoing health impacts of the event.
“Students got reassurance that they have a community who supports them,” Jewish Student Union Vice President of External Affairs Matthew Zivian said at the vigil. “As for MSU, the school got a nice and clear message: we’re here for peace, we’re here for healing, we’re here for love.”
ASMSU voted on bills about campaigning policies and the value of student voices on the Presidential Search Committee at their meeting on Oct. 5. They also heard presentations from the provost on academic goals and an MSUPD detective on the dangers of sextortion.
Thousands of incoming Spartans will have their tuition covered for up to eight semesters, thanks to MSU's new financial aid program, Spartan Tuition Advantage. To be eligible, students must be citizens or permanent U.S. residents, qualify for in-state tuition, be Pell Grant eligible and have a household income of $65,000 or less.
The stage adaptation of Harper Lee's novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird" ran at Michigan State University's Wharton Center from Oct. 3 until this past Sunday, Oct. 8. Last Wednesday, Greater Lansing residents and MSU students gathered to watch the Broadway play's opening show at 8 p.m. The play lasted roughly three hours, with a 15-minute intermission.
John Issacson, the chair of the national executive recruiting firm running MSU’s search for a new president, released a statement Monday pushing back on speculation that the recent firing of former football coach Mel Tucker amid sexual harassment allegations has affected the search.
Trustee and Presidential Search Committee Chair Dennis Denno released a statement saying he “misspoke” last month when he said the Board of Trustees may ultimately select a candidate who doesn’t receive the committee’s endorsement. Denno's statement followed multiple criticisms from MSU faculty and students regarding his comments, some of which he addressed in the statement.
The FRIB's $115 million it received through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science will fund its High Rigidity Spectrometer project. The project has been identified as key in advancing nuclear science research.
