MSU Student Veterans of America President Kyle Kissinger said he was “surprised” when MSU was named a veteran-friendly school. MSU was awarded a gold status by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, MVAA, as part of their Veteran-Friendly School program on Aug 26.
The MSU hockey team announced Wednesday that alum and two-time All-American, Mike York will be joining the MSU hockey team this season as a student assistant. York played at MSU from 1995-1999 and earned two All-American honors, and went on to spend 10 seasons in the National Hockey League. York is returning to MSU to finish his degree in communication.

After overcoming injury, kinesiology senior Spencer Shellberg and third-year veterinary student Elaine Sheikh have both qualified to run for Team USA. Sheikh qualified for Team USA in 2015 and will compete for them again this year on Sept. 15 and 19. In order to qualify, the athlete has to place in the top 20 for his or her age group at one of the national championship races.

In front of over 3,600 people, the MSU volleyball team hosted the No. 7 team in the nation, the University of Florida, over the weekend in the Auto-Owners Spartan Invitational. While the Spartans fell in straight sets to Florida, they had a winning weekend, going 2-1.
On MSU game days, the excitement and activities aren’t limited to the game itself. Across all five neighborhoods of campus, cars pull up and cornhole games are set up before the game.
The MSU volleyball team lost on Sunday to #7, University of Florida Gators, and were swept in three sets. The Gators beat the Spartans 25-13 in the first set, 25-16 in the second and completed the sweep with 25-19 set victory in the third. Florida was the highest ranked opponent MSU faced during the SPartan Invitational, after sweeping both Morgan State and Central Michigan on Saturday.
The MSU volleyball team swept both games Saturday against Morgan State University and Central Michigan University. MSU held both team to 10% and under success rate, Morgan State had 8.2%, while Central Michigan had a 10% success rate throughout the game, compared to the Spartans 30.7% and 31.5%.
Bouncing to the outside and headed toward the right sideline looking to cut into open field, Furman’s Richard Hayes III couldn’t see junior nose tackle Malik McDowell bounding after him. Before he could look up field, he was ripped off the ground by McDowell and slammed to the turf, his body caught in a wrangled mess.
Josiah Price, normally kept from the mouth of the public address announcer recorded two penalties — one a fifteen yard personal foul, the other a hold.
MSU football opened up their season with a seven play, 76 yard scoring drive in under four minutes. The following 56 were inert and underactive with flashes of potential, but mental lapses on both sides of the ball allowed Furman to stick around for the majority of the game. A philosophy one could take after MSU’s 28-13 win? Survive and advance.
