E.L., U police explore possible merger options

East Lansing and MSU police could merge into one department under an initiative unveiled Tuesday.The agencies revealed a plan to enhance cooperation between the departments while improving efficiency and reducing costs.“We’re still in the very beginning process and stages, so right now the sky is the limit,” said East Lansing police Chief Louis Muhn.

The MSU Department of Advertising has a new face - well, this week it does.Rick Boyko, the high-profile president and chief creative officer of Ogilvy & Mather in New York, is instructing a class through Thursday this week.The department hosts two visiting professors each year in hopes to give students a new perspective into the advertising industry.“I think this will give students a broader perspective of what the business is really like,” Boyko said.

Gun control movie debuts, brings protesters

A controversial issue grew even more heated Monday night at the Union during a panel discussion following the premiere of “America: Up in Arms,” a documentary about gun violence.Gun control protesters showed up, toting signs that read “Gun control is for wimps and Commies” and “The 2nd Amendment, love it or leave.”The premiere and forum were part of “First Monday 2000: Unite to End Gun Violence,” a program created by the Alliance for Justice and Physicians for Social Responsibility.The movie debuted across the nation in an effort to promote education about gun violence and to provide common sense solutions.It detailed the deaths of three young people - one who was shot during a robbery, one who committed suicide with a handgun and one who was accidentally shot by his friend while playing with a semi-automatic weapon.

LANSING - Thirteen-year-old Brandi Bukowski stood on the balcony overlooking the first floor rotunda of the Capitol building Monday night. New license plates sport famous Spartan symbol

Soon there will be a little more green on cars driving around campus.Monday morning, Spartan faithful were able to begin purchasing MSU license plates, which feature the famous MSU block “S.”The plates were made for the secretary of state’s “Be True To Your School” promotion.
