CHICAGO - When I got out of bed Wednesday morning at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers, I pushed power on the television remote and quickly switched the channel to ESPN to make sure I hadn’t missed any exciting sports news during my rest. ESPN went to a commercial so I clicked to the next available sports commentary - CNN.

Camp bridges technology gap

Michigan area middle-schoolers have been trying their hands at new technology during the third annual Kids Learning In Computer Klubhouses, or KLICK, Leadership Camp, held on MSU’s campus this week. The KLICK program is an after-school program designed to teach middle-schoolers of low economic backgrounds or communities how to use new technology.

Pro bowl tackle dies

CHICAGO - Minnesota Viking tackle Korey Stringer, a former star in the Big Ten while playing for Ohio State, died Wednesday after a grueling practice at the Vikings’ training camp the previous day. “It’s every family’s and every coach’s nightmare,” Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr said at the 2001 Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon. The 335-pound lineman developed symptoms of heat stroke, including weakness and rapid breathing, following the practice Tuesday held in temperatures in the low 90s and high humidity.

An MSU graduate is coming back to Michigan to publicize his new book, “Queen of Aces.” The book, which has received a number of good reviews, is the story of a female pilot during World War II who deals with sexism and a love triangle.

Crashing ride hospitalizes many

By JAMES PRICHARDThe Associated PressDALTON TOWNSHIP - The maker of a spinning ride at Michigan’s Adventure Amusement Park that crashed to the ground with 33 people aboard said Tuesday it was the first such problem with the Chaos ride.Meanwhile, it probably will be at least today before officials can make even a preliminary determination as to the cause of Monday’s accident, said Steve Mark, vice president of construction and maintenance at the western Michigan amusement park.The accident sent 31 riders to hospitals for treatment or examination.

State officials remain confident in economy

Even with the economy in a slump and consumers scared to spend, Michigan officials aren’t worried.The Conference Board, a New York-based research group, said Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index fell from 118.9 in June to 116.5 in July.The index is a survey of consumers, where questions about the economy and people’s confidence in it are rated and looked at by economists to chart the economy’s status, said Charles Ballard, an economics professor.“If consumer confidence is strong, that often means consumers are optimistic about the future and willing to spend money,” he said.

State schools seek tax credit repeal

Seven thousand students at Lansing Community College took advantage of Michigan’s Tuition Tax Credit in 1999.MSU didn’t qualify for the refund.But like MSU’s Board of Trustees, LCC officials are still hoping for a repeal of the fund-granting law.“This would be more revenue for all community colleges, which could benefit all of our students, not just those who qualify,” said Barbara Larson, LCC’s vice president of finance.

Top quarterback to play for U

One of the nation’s top high school quarterbacks will be throwing the pigskin for the Spartans in 2002. Farmington Hills Harrison’s Drew Stanton, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior, told The State News on Tuesday he intends to commit with the team in February. “I’ve kind of known for a while and I was going to announce before I went to the Nike Elite Camp, but I decided to wait until now,” Stanton said. The Nike Elite camp, held in San Diego last month, invites the nations’ top 12 quarterbacks.
