States face future shortages in blood supply

Waiting until another tragedy like the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to donate blood could cause a severe shortage in blood supply around the country. Jim Rummel, a spokesman for the Great Lakes region of the American Red Cross, said California, Arizona, New York and Chicago all experienced shortages in the last few weeks, but not Michigan - yet. “We personally aren’t having a problem yet in the Great Lakes region,” Rummel said.

Williams Knott the biggest loser

I was happy to see The State News has “Knott” forgotten to include Bobby Williams on the list of 2001’s biggest losers (“It doesn’t matter if you win or lose...,” SN 12/7). Although I agree with what you wrote, I feel that we, as a university, are the losers in this decision.

Lions fans bid farewell to dome

Pontiac, Mich. - In a game closing out the season between two cellar-dwelling teams, one might expect something other than an enthusiastic crowd. But when the Detroit Lions (2-14) downed the Dallas Cowboys (5-11) 15-10, more than just two disappointing seasons came to an end - a chapter in Detroit Lions football history concluded with the final game at the Silverdome. Lions fans from throughout the country converged on the Silverdome one last time, and for Bill Vanfaasen the move to Ford Field in downtown Detroit couldn‘t come soon enough. Vanfaasen, formerly of Holland, Mich., has been driving from Green Bay, Wisc.

Critic hungry for local acts

I can’t be everywhere at once. As much as I’d like to, I just don’t have the ability. But if it isn’t obvious enough, I’m a music junkie, and I’d like to do my best to represent the local music community as best as I can. I received a bit of flak in the past for not covering some of the lesser-known bands in the area, but this is my attempt to do something about it. I’ve received numerous complaints of giving recognition to a choice of delicatessen of the same bands over and over again such as Mason’s Case, Under Construction or The Flow. What many don’t realize is I’m a student too, and don’t have the time to go out and ask around for the talent I know many students have.

Dead wrong

If there’s one lesson President Bush should have learned from his father’s presidency, it’s not to make promises you may not be able to keep. At a California rally on Saturday, Bush vowed he wouldn’t allow his 10-year, $1.35 trillion tax reduction plan to be reduced, shouting, “Not over my dead body will they raise your taxes” to the crowd.

Olympic torchbearers blaze through Lansing area

Lansing - Flashbulbs popped and reflected on the snow surrounding Grand River Avenue as MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo clutched the Olympic torch in his official 2002 Winter Olympics sparkling white jumpsuit. Let the flames begin. For Izzo, and 34 Michigan residents, the once-in-a-lifetime experience of carrying the Olympic torch was in grasp Sunday, as the torchbearers ran on Michigan and Grand River avenues with the Olympic flames in hand as part of the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay. “It’s a thrill, especially this year of all years,” said Izzo, who carried the famed flames two-tenths of a mile.

Cell phone users in Meridian to get clearer, improved service

A multi-provider cellular tower is being built to improve cellular phone service in Meridian Township. The 180-foot tower will be constructed within the next month between Meridian Township Hall, 5151 Marsh Road, and its adjacent public safety building. The tower was designed to resemble a three-sided clock tower with panels hiding its antennae and a clock face on each side, township officials said.
