Virus may affect 'U' overseas studies

The outbreak of a deadly virus in several foreign nations is forcing officials in MSU's Office of Study Abroad to discuss potential program changes. No decision has been made to bring home two MSU students who are studying in Asian nations identified as high risk areas for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS, said Kathleen Fairfax, director of the Office of Study Abroad. "We're still taking a wait-and-see approach because the information is still evolving," Fairfax said.

SPARE rally not as 'U' hoped

Lansing - Students came from across the state sporting school sweatshirts and banners - all 50 of them. Students Protecting And Representing Education, or SPARE, held a rally at the Capitol on Wednesday to maintain higher education state funding as the state faces a budget crisis with a $1.7 billion deficit. "This is embarrassing," said Jared English, SPARE member and ASMSU director of university and governmental affairs.

Police focus wasn't protecting students

The MSU win Friday sparked a peaceful celebration which provoked police to arrest several people for things as minor as the following: one young man with an open can of beer who debated with officers about pouring it out, a student who questioned officers why they were arresting his friend and a gentleman who was merely tackling his roommate in celebration of victory. On Sunday evening, the instances that occurred truly proved "two wrongs don't make a right." Although unruly students might have been destructive, the police reaction was completely out of control.
