Staff member selected to agricultural council

A staff member from MSU Extension has been selected for the Michigan Agricultural Electric Council. Roxanne Pillars, a dairy agent for MSU Extension, will sit on the 10-member council, which serves as a resource for farmers, veterinarians, Extension agents and Michigan agribusiness's.

Environmental groups protest

Lansing - The Capitol roared to life Wednesday morning with the angry buzz of chain saw-wielding environmental activists.The groups gathered on the west Capitol lawn to protest what they deemed the "systematic destruction of the national forests" under the Bush administration.Representatives of the Public Interest Research Group in Michigan, the National Forest Protection Alliance, the Sierra Club and the Alaska Coalition were on hand for the demonstration, which included a "21-chain saw salute." Kelly Dettmer, an Ann Arbor research group member, led the coalition's chain saw salute with three cries of "Timber," after which seven chain saws were raised and revved.Activists said they were upset about The Healthy Forest Restoration Initiative.

Affirmative action fuels discrimination

Andrew Goetz was off the mark in his column dealing with affirmative action ("Conservatives inconsistent with policy," SN 6/26). What most Democrats and some Republicans do not realize is that affirmative action, and other similar programs, are fundamentally flawed.

East Lansing residents can stop putting off returning those overdue library books. It's amnesty month at the East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbott Road. Until July 31, all library patrons returning materials - no matter how late they are - will not have to pay any late fines.

Faculty member leaves 'U' to teach in Germany

A MSU faculty member will be leaving the green and white when she takes off for Berlin in September. Mei Zhuang, an associate professor of mechanical engineering, was named a Fulbright Senior Scholar and will live in Germany for 10 months, teaching and researching at the Technische Universitat Berlin. Her research will focus on developing computational aeroacoustics tools to be used in the noise prediction systems of turbofan engines.

Mainstream media wrong to ignore minority hate crimes

A while ago I wrote a column about the tragically growing trend of young murder victims due to their real or perceived gender transgressions ("Day offers remembrance, reflection on life's struggles", SN 11/21). The numbers are ever soaring, the victims and perpetrators alike getting younger, the murders ever more brutal. One of the many transgender hate crime victims was 17-year-old transwoman Gwen Araujo of Newark, Calif.

Costly errors

In trying financial times, it's not good public policy to also deny aid to those who need economic support, but needlessly forfeit money to the federal government. But Michigan is apparently doing both.

Creating additional jobs in Benton Harbor is a step in the right direction of rectifying the underlying issues that fueled the city's riots. But it's a shame it took such an uproar to call attention to the severe economic problems that encompass the area.

The T-101 (Schwarzenegger) has been sent back to the present once again to prevent the death of future resistance leader John Connor (Nick Stahl) from Skynet's faster, stronger and smarter terminator, the T-X (Kristanna Loken). The T-101's mission also is to protect innocent veterinarian Kate Brewster (Claire Danes), whose life also is intertwined - though less importantly than Connor's - in the path the future takes after Judgment Day. Together, John and Kate realize Judgment Day is coming sooner than they expected - within three hours.

Faculty request to park in student lot turned down

Clinical Center faculty members were denied different parking arrangements by MSU police last week after about a month of petitioning to avoid having to walk through a construction zone. A petition signed by 39 members of the Clinical Center requesting different parking arrangements was denied by MSU police on June 23.
