Noise violation policy applies to all: 'U' should test it out

Although the East Lansing City Council has decided to propose jail time and disproportionately high fines for infractions against the city code, I would like to preface this column by assuring my readers that I am neither writing this column from jail nor writing it on my way to jail.Instead, following the onslaught of controversy surrounding the new noise violation rules imposed by the East Lansing City Council, I have just finished reading the new ordinance.

The MSU volleyball team isn't playing for individual accolades this season, but when someone is performing as well as senior setter Nikki Colson has been, those honors just happen.Colson, a three-year captain from Lincoln, Neb., not only was named Big Ten Player of the Week but also was named AVCA National Player of the Week after her MVP weekend in Washington, D.C., at the American Volleyball Classic.

Michigan lawmakers are back in session and looking for ways to boost a struggling economy while promoting job growth, but analysts say they should brace themselves for budget shortfalls again this year. The House of Representatives began session Tuesday, a week after the Senate reconvened, facing the state's highest unemployment rate in more than a decade and preparing to tackle issues such as trash importation and university funding.

Armed thieves rob apartment

Three MSU students were tied up at gunpoint while thieves ransacked their apartment near campus early Tuesday, police said.The attack follows two separate incidents on Sunday night in East Lansing, where female students were approached by gunmen demanding they hand over their belongings.East Lansing police don't believe there is a connection between Sunday's robberies and Tuesday's intrusion, which occurred at about 5:30 a.m.

Letter rebuttal missed the point

Muslim Muhamad Haydar disliked Jim Peterson's thought that Muslims who kill innocent civilians are welcomed into heaven in his letter to the editor "Alumnus wrong about Muslims" (SN 9/8). I think it would be more prudent for Haydar to dislike the fact that there seems to be an infinite number of Muslims scattered throughout the world that agree with Peterson.

Presidential candidate visit to be rescheduled

An Oct. 6 visit to campus from Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean has been delayed, campaign organizers said Monday.While Dean is still planning to visit MSU, the date will be pushed back because of traveling and scheduling conflicts.

Two MSU students were robbed at gunpoint in separate incidents in East Lansing on Sunday night by men who demanded they hand over their belongings, police said.East Lansing police believe it is likely that the robberies, which occurred two miles apart from each other during a 20-minute span, are connected.
