ASMSU to debate T-shirt controversy next week

ASMSU officials are considering next week a statement denouncing the circulation of explicit anti-University of Michigan T-shirts and fliers. The public statement would not be made until the week after the football game. A bill was sent to both assemblies of MSU's undergraduate student government to make a statement against a flier distributed across campus last week that bore the phrase "Wolverines Pack Fudge" above an explicit drawing as an advertisement for T-shirts bearing the same image. "We support diversity on campus," Student Assembly Vice Chairperson for Internal Affairs Andrew Schepers said at the Academic Assembly meeting Tuesday night.

Defense starts slowly for hoops team in scrimmage

Just because the depth issues that hampered the MSU women's basketball team are relatively healed, the defense still appeared to be hurting. At the women's annual Green and White game on Saturday, the Spartans showed off a jelled offense and transition game but gave their scrimmage team opponents sufficient room to shoot from outside. The Spartans wore out their scrimmage team - made mostly of MSU basketball managers - 77-64, but head coach Joanne P.

No fish tale could outdo Marlins year

Silence was all he heard. As Josh Beckett tagged out Jorge Posada and was lifted into the air in jubilation after his five-hit shutout performance sealed Game 6 and the World Series title for the Florida Marlins on Saturday night, the world stood mute as South Florida ran wild. The world was silenced partially because of shock, but mostly because so many felt wronged. How could this team come from 10 games below .500 after firing a manager earlier in the season and become the champions?

Support for Israel hard to come by

In "American-backed Israel not the victim in Palestinian fight" (SN 10/21), Crystal Burks wrote that "When I see the news, I don't just see suicide bombings; I see one country crying out for help against another country that seemingly is supported by everyone." Burks might want to consider the numerous United Nations resolutions condemning Israel for its "occupation" of Palestine and re-evaluate whether "everyone" supports Israel.

REVIEW: Matchbox Twenty wows Breslin crowd with hits old and new

Matchbox Twenty sparked a fire of excitement with smooth ballads, heartfelt lyrics and an energetic stage presence Sunday night at Breslin Center. From the start, the estimated crowd of 6,000 people rose to their feet cheering and applauding as the band opened with "Feel," the first song on their third album "More Than You Think You Are." A transparent drum set and amplifiers in front of three large vertical screens highlighted the five-member band in a two-hour performance. The band's energy was returned by the crowd as they danced and sang along to old and new singles including "Real World," "All I Need" and "Bright Lights." But the hit receiving the largest response was "Disease," as lead vocalist Rob Thomas took off his jacket and paraded around stage alongside lead guitarist Kyle Cook. Wearing a mesh baseball cap, drummer Paul Doucette pounded on the drums as bassist Brian Yale and rhythm guitarist Adam Gaynor dashed around the set. "You guys are feisty and saucy," Thomas said to the crowd at the conclusion of the song.
