I realize that this letter won't be published until after the big game this weekend, but I needed to respond to the comments that John Addis relayed in "Spartans are more than underdogs" (SN 10/30). I'm glad for MSU and it's followers that they have become more competitive over the last 10 years.

Lecture to discuss abstract dimension

Untying knots, stealing gold bricks from closed iron safes and unfolding hypercubes all are part of the fourth dimension. Although it sounds like a science-fiction concept, the fourth dimension is the topic of the most recent installment of the Lyman Briggs School Lecture Series. Michael Starbird, a professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin, will discuss the abstract domain at 7:30 p.m.

Iraq war to be topic of Noontime series

Student Life's Noontime Conversation Series continues Wednesday with a discussion about the war in Iraq. William Allen of MSU's Department of Political Science will lead a discussion entitled "The Consequences of the Iraq War: Too Little Too Fast." The conversation runs from 12:10 to 1 p.m.

Bible Week and Church/State Separation Week are nationally recognized the week of Nov. 23-30. However, with the advice of East Lansing Mayor Mark Meadows, the city council has decided that Church/State Separation Week will be recognized in East Lansing on Nov.

Poll: Charter school support falls

Support for charter schools has fallen slightly since 1998, according to a report released Wednesday by MSU researchers.The report, based on a 965-person survey conducted by the MSU Education Policy Center, showed support has declined 8 percent in the last five years, from 63 percent in 1998 to 55 percent this year.

The streets of East Lansing were filled with somber Spartans fans and elated Wolverines faithful Saturday night, marking a peaceful end to a busy weekend in the city. There were no destructive fires or overturned cars as revelers stayed home after MSU's loss to the University of Michigan on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Student approached at knifepoint near Shaw Hall

An MSU student was approached at knifepoint by a man demanding money early Friday morning while walking along the river trail on the south side of Shaw Hall, MSU police said.On Thursday, several men broke into an apartment in East Lansing and threatened a resident with guns before ransacking her home and taking away foreign currency and a cell phone, East Lansing police said. Spartans, U-M boast special teams weapons

When No. 9 MSU and No. 11 Michigan go head to head this weekend in their traditional Big Ten smashmouth rivalry game, a bunch of kickers and return men might end up stealing the show. "I think this game might come down to special teams, whoever makes the bigger plays," said MSU junior linebacker Mike Labinjo, who plays on some special teams. "I think that we've got some good special teams, especially our kickoff return team." Spartans sophomore running back DeAndra Cobb is the only player in the nation to return two kickoffs for touchdowns this season. Lansing mayoral candidates Virg Bernero and Tony Benavides both are Democrats. No. 8 Ohio State at Penn State Normally a key conference game, this season's Penn State-Ohio State game has a lackluster feel. The Nittany Lions (2-6 overall, 0-4 Big Ten) are headed to one of their worst seasons ever, amidst some controversial off-field issues. Thomas McHugh, a Penn State sophomore offensive lineman, was charged with harassment, public drunkenness and underage drinking and was kicked off the team.

The MSU volleyball team is where it always seems to be at this point of the season - in the middle of the pack.The Spartans are 5-5 in conference play, tied for sixth with Purdue, right about where they have been the past couple of seasons.

Navarre sheds critics, leads team in title hunt

No matter how much criticism and second-guessing John Navarre has faced during his time at Michigan, his coach is confident the senior quarterback's play will speak for itself when that time is up. "Well, you know, in seven, eight months, John Navarre is going to be making a hell of a lot more money than all those people who criticized him," U-M coach Lloyd Carr said. Though Navarre's future as an NFL quarterback remains uncertain, those within the Wolverines' football program don't doubt he is the right man to lead them toward its goal - a Big Ten championship.
