Area Catholics react to Mass. ruling

Members of the Lansing-area Catholic community are reflecting on the Massachusetts Supreme Court decision that said banning same-sex unions is unconstitutional.During Thanksgiving weekend, Massachusetts Catholic churches read a statement from the state's Catholic Conference regarding same-sex marriages.Now, as the church enters the season of Advent, a period regarded as a time of preparation, Catholic officials are educating their congregations on the issues."Marriage for us is a complementary union," said the Rev.

Professor discusses Polish Jews Friday

Jewish communities in post-Communist Poland will be discussed Friday afternoon through the Jewish Studies Program. Professor Keely Stauter-Halsted, director of Jewish Studies and professor in the Department of History, will discuss the question of "Polish Jews or Jewish Poles?" in room 113 of Linton Hall.

TV draws criticism, praise for recent gay trends

They're five gay men, out to take over the world - one straight guy at a time. "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" uses its five gay main characters and their respective talents - fashion, grooming, culture, interior design, and food and wine - to rescue style-deprived, straight men. As more producers realize the marketability of gay characters on reality television shows, cable television shows and network sitcoms, programs such as "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," "Will & Grace," and "Queer as Folk" are continuing to find their way into network programming. "I remember back in the early '90s when allusions to gay lifestyle were done in a very cautious way," MSU Professor Gary Hoppenstand said.

Schools, state to combine buying

In a collaboration that could save millions of dollars, Michigan's 15 public universities will team up with the state when purchasing goods and services. Developed from the concept that buying in bulk saves money, Michigan's universities signed onto the State of Michigan/Higher Education Purchasing Consortium. Under the consortium, schools can choose to sign onto different contracts depending on each school's needs. Bridget Medina, spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Management and Budget, said the initiative is a smart business move and didn't develop because of Michigan's poor budget. "This is looking at the situation from a business perspective," she said.

Three MSU volleyball players earned all-Big Ten honors this week.Junior outside hitter Kim Schram was named to first team all-Big Ten, and senior setter Nikki Colson and senior middle Jenny Rood won honorable mention."It's good for the team to have players recognized," Schram said.

Chandler Road traffic study set

A resolution allowing a joint study of Chandler Road was approved by East Lansing officials Tuesday night, setting the stage for the project to begin.The purpose of the study, which is expected to start in January, is to evaluate traffic patterns on Chandler Road, from Lake Lansing Road in East Lansing to Stoll Road in Bath Township.

Duke, 'U' collide for first time since '99

On Sunday afternoon, MSU senior center Jason Andreas and his fellow captains, junior guard Chris Hill and junior swingman Alan Anderson, lifted the Coca-Cola Spartan Classic trophy. Minutes after the game, the Duke lineup appeared on the dry-erase board in the Spartans' locker room. "We're going to enjoy this championship for a couple hours," Andreas said after MSU's 89-81 win over DePaul.

E.L. hotel, businesses host chili festival

The annual East Lansing Winter Festival & Chili Cook-Off will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Among events scheduled will be a chili cook-off between downtown restaurants, horse and carriage rides and a Mocktail Contest.The Chili Cook-Off begins in the Marriott at University Place, 300 M.A.C.

Police investigating battery; victim suffers minor injuries

Two men pulled a male student from his parked car on Monday night before beating him and stealing his wallet, East Lansing police said.At about 9:20 p.m., the student apparently was returning to his car on the 400 block of Division Street after studying on campus when the men approached him.

'Leelanau' exhibit gives new color to state sites

Michigan often is known for its odd shape and abundance of water, but contemporary landscape artist Ben Whitehouse is portraying a part of Michigan not often exhibited. On display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum until January 4, 2004 is Whitehouse's series of paintings, "Leelanau: Michigan's Eden," which show the beauty of the peninsula while using water as a medium.
