'Pride and Prejudice' play draws from timeless classic

What happens when a mother plots her daughters' path to success?At 8 p.m. on Friday, the Lansing Community College Performing Arts will answer that question with Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice."Directed by Mary Job, a visiting instructor from MSU, and featuring MSU theater seniors Amber Zmick and Dan Swalec, this stage adaptation of Austen's novel opened Friday in Dart Auditorium, 500 N.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Michigan 'U' leaders to unite in effort to spare higher education cuts

Presidents from Michigan's 15 public universities plan to send out a unified message to lawmakers Wednesday hoping to spare higher education from further large state cuts.In the first ever State of the Public Universities Address, Wayne State University President Irving Reid will outline what the institutions have done to adjust from cuts this year and how the schools are bracing possible future cuts looming as the state scrambles balance about a $900 million shortfall.The leaders of all 15 Michigan public universities will be on hand along with lawmakers and governing members from the schools."One of the few things that gives Michigan a competitive advantage is this collection of 15 public universities," said Mike Boulus, executive director of the Presidents Council, which is made up of the 15 schools.For more on this story, please see Wednesday's edition of The State News.

Spartans' rebound, shoot to 83-55 win

The good news - the MSU women's basketball team improved their defense, interior game and rebounding in Saturday's 83-55 exhibition win over Hungarian touring team Zala Volan at Breslin Center.The bad news - the Spartans don't have another European squad on the schedule.MSU outplayed Zala Volan in nearly every aspect Saturday, flirting with 20-point leads throughout the duration of the contest and grabbing 49 rebounds.

Students, professors should create better class atmosphere

This semester, I started doing something I haven't done on a consistent basis during my college career - I started attending my classes, and I don't really know why. Maybe I was nervous about graduating and wanted to make sure I heard every word uttered from my professor's mouth.

The annual Global Festival will take place from noon to 5 p.m Sunday at the Union Co-sponsored by the University Activities Board and Community Volunteers for International Programs, the event will host many events aimed to increase international cultural awareness in the community.

Local author hosts library book reading

Local novelist Pamela Ditchoff will promote her second book in East Lansing on Wednesday. Her book, "Seven Days & Seven Sins: a Novel in Short Stories," is set in Lantern Hill, a fictitious Lansing neighborhood, with the framework of the seven deadly sins. Ditchoff will read and discuss the book at 7 p.m.

Victory at Wisconsin is 4th straight

As the cold weather sweeps in from outside, the MSU volleyball team has begun to heat up inside gyms around the Big Ten. The Spartans (17-7 overall, 9-5 Big Ten) continued their winning ways on the road, beating Wisconsin, 30-26, 21-30, 22-30, 30-25 and 15-8.

Columbus, Ohio - With starting strong safety Eric Smith out, the MSU defense was forced to make many pass-coverage adjustments. But in the end, they weren't enough, as MSU lost to Ohio State 33-23 at Ohio Stadium.

As the weather continues to get colder, sneezes and coughs are becoming the norm around campus. We all know colds and flu start infecting the area this time of the year, so here's a new idea: Take initiative and get a vaccination before you're stuck in bed with a fever and congested sinuses. The 2002 National College Health Assessment reported that 78 percent of MSU students got a cold or the flu last year.

Club offers free yoga

A free day of yoga will be held Nov. 15 in the Union's Ohio State Room. The Medical Yoga Club of MSU will be offering yoga classes and lessons, booklets and fliers about yoga, yoga therapy and demonstrations of yoga that include medical yoga. The free event will be from 9 a.m.
