Trustees to vote on anti-discrimination amendment

The MSU Board of Trustees will decide Friday whether to add gender identity to MSU's anti-discrimination policy, and officials said an approval could push the university closer to acceptance of every person on campus. The amendment, which was first introduced about two years ago, would add the phrase "gender identity" and a footnote under the harassment section of the discrimination policy. "People need these kinds of things to protect themselves," said Henry Silverman, president of the Lansing Branch of the Michigan American Civil Liberties Union.

Lansing yard waste collected this week

The City of Lansing will be collecting leaves and yard waste raked to the curbside this week. Residents can dispose of leaves and grass clippings in any large 30-gallon paper bag or 30-gallon rigid metal or plastic container that has a composting identification sticker. It's illegal for residents to rake leaves into streets, and all bags and containers must weigh less than 30 pounds or they will not be picked up. Identification stickers are available for free by calling the Waste Reduction Services Hotline at (517) 483-4400.

Members of the MSU community are highly interested in learning about diversity programs and services available on campus, evaluations of October's Best Practices in Diversity conference indicated. The conference aimed to share ideas on increasing diversity and multiculturalism between colleges and programs at MSU.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Kucinich outlines platform at stop in E.L.

Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich briefly stopped in East Lansing Thursday, promoting his plan to pull the troops out of Iraq in 90 days.About 200 people attended the public reception, hoping to hear the platform of the Ohio congressman."There are people that believe war is inevitable," Kucinich said.

T-shirts protected by free speech

In regard to this whole "offensive" T-shirt debacle, I need to lend in my two cents. Yes, the shirts were offensive; they didn't offend me personally, but apparently, some people (albeit, it appears to be a small group) found the shirts offensive.
