Gov. Jennifer Granholm proposed raising Michigan's cigarette tax from $1.25 to $2 Tuesday, an act that would bring an estimated $295 million additional revenue to the state. "If we really want to get a handle on health care, we need to deter kids from smoking.

Event planners are busy people. They work long hours with a cell phone glued to an ear, trying to organize conventions or lectures and keep everyone happy in the process. Spartans take road, seek revenge against Illinois

The past is in the past, or so the saying goes. But the Spartans say last year's game against Illinois in Champaign isn't erased from their memories. It's a game that MSU would like to forget, but for the sake of revenge, the team has scrapped through a year's load of memories to bring the 70-40 shellacking to the forefront of its brain. At one point, the Spartans trailed 69-28 with less than three minutes to play in the game before ending the contest on a 12-1 run. "Oh, we remember," senior center Jason Andreas said.

Controversial complex near completion

A new student housing complex under construction just one block from Brody Complex has almost reached completion. The $3.4 million Campus Village, which has drawn protest from many nearby residents, will begin housing students in one of its two buildings in May. The entire complex, located on Michigan Avenue between Cedar Green Apartments and The Oaks Apartments, will be ready in time for students to move in for fall semester. The complex is made up of two three-story buildings and can house up to 222 students. Many of the same amenities featured in recently built Northern Tier complexes will be available, including tanning booths and exercise and game rooms. "The other places on Abbott Road are four miles away," said Adam Cross, the marketing director for Campus Village Communities, the company building the complex.

Gymnastics records season-best on vault

The Spartans gymnastics team placed third Friday at the 2004 State of Michigan Classic in Ann Arbor with a score of 195.525. Sophomore Sarah Alexander earned third place with 39.250 in the all-around, and tied for first place in the beam event. The Spartans posted 49.00 during the floor event, while individually, Alexander tied for fourth place with a 9.90 score. The team placed third on vault with a season-best score of 48.825.

Lansing detective joins county sheriff race

A second candidate has been added to the race for Ingham County Sheriff. Lansing police Detective James Gill announced he will make his second attempt to win the election, facing Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth. Gill's decision comes nearly three weeks after Wriggelsworth announced that he was seeking a fifth term.

Electing delegates next step for Mich.

Mark Brewer has the answer to the question many people have on their minds, "I voted, now what?" Brewer, the chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party, said now that the more than 160,000 votes from Saturday's Democratic caucus have been tallied, state political leaders will prepare for the National Democratic Convention.
