The MSU Board of Trustees approved several university building renovations at its meeting Friday, including a $3 million addition to the Cyclotron. Construction to the building will begin soon and should be completed by December, according to University Engineer Bob Nestle.

GEU, 'U' arbitration rescheduled for April

Arbitration between the Graduate Employees Union and the university has been rescheduled for April 16. The arbitration concerns a grievance filed by the GEU in November charging that the university was wrongfully taking benefits from GEU members by reclassifying teaching assistant positions as instructors. The original arbitration was set for Jan.

A coalition of groups that took issue with difficulties regarding several Michigan Democratic caucus sites in Detroit now says it would like to switch from a closed caucus to an open, state-run primary in future elections. The coalition - comprised of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, the Michigan Democratic Party Black Caucus, the National Action Network Michigan Chapter and the Michigan NAACP - became concerned after six voting sites in Detroit were closed for the caucus, leaving voters wondering where they could participate. A coalition of groups that took issue with difficulties regarding several Michigan Democratic caucus sites in Detroit now say they would like to switch from a closed caucus to an open state-run primary in future elections. The coalition - comprised of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, the Michigan Democratic Party Black Caucus, the National Action Network Michigan Chapter and the Michigan NAACP - also would like to see computer-education programs in low-income urban areas so that computer illiterate residents can learn how to vote via the Internet. Concerns arose after six caucus sites in the 14th congressional district were closed for the caucus, leaving voters wondering where they could cast their votes. Spartans beat Minnesota, 69-58, in Saturday contest at Breslin

Despite playing poorly for the game's first 20 minutes, down the stretch, the Spartans found ways to win. MSU turned up the defensive intensity and had a season-high 15 steals while holding Minnesota to just 19 second-half points en route to a 69-58 victory Saturday afternoon. "We're in a mode where we have to keep winning - just finding ways to win," said MSU head coach Tom Izzo, who became the third coach in Big Ten history to win 100 conference games in his first nine seasons.

Rude people also 'advertise' greeks

I was surprised to learn that Mindy Golub considers the large canvas bags carried by some sorority members to be "advertising," a way of getting other women interested in greek organizations ("Sororities given bad rap in column" SN 2/9). Unfortunately for me, the bags only serve as a daily reminder of why I will never join a sorority in my time here at MSU.
