MIDDAY UPDATE: City leaders, McPherson discuss possible medical school relocation

Several Mid-Michigan leaders met on Wednesday to discuss concerns with the possible relocation of MSU's College of Human Medicine to Grand Rapids.East Lansing Mayor Mark Meadows and Lansing Mayor Tony Benavides were among the group of city constituents that formed the Lansing-area Executive Response Team.Concerns have mounted with several city leaders over what the economic repercussions would be should the college make the move."We're concerned about the impact this move would make in terms of our health-care service," Benavides said.

Vietnam veteran status helps Kerry's campaign

Service in the Vietnam War, something that once elicited spite from many Americans, has become a source of credibility for John Kerry as he continues to surge in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. Kerry, the current front-runner in the race, discusses his Naval service during the war - as well as his activities after it - at nearly every public appearance. During a recent visit to Mott Community College in Flint, the candidate told the crowd he still counts on the men who served alongside him.

Parties join to fight ASMSU code

After discussion at a special ASMSU committee meeting Tuesday night, representatives from two of MSU's student groups say they plan to look into legal action against the ASMSU election code. Six students from MSU College Democrats and MSU College Republicans attended ASMSU's Academic Assembly meeting Tuesday night to protest MSU's undergraduate student government's new election code because they said it limits freedom of speech.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Provost proposes reorganization of liberal arts

MSU Provost Lou Anna Simon released her view on the future of liberal arts at MSU today, suggesting the combination and elimination of some colleges.Simon hopes members from the university community will give her their suggestions before she creates formal proposals during spring break.Under the proposal, the College of Communication Arts and Sciences and the College of Arts and Letters will be combined into the new College of Communication, Arts, Languages and Media.The College of Human Ecology also could be dissolved and its programs dispersed throughout the university.

As Brenda Sternquist prepared to leave her hotel in India and brave the wilderness, she had no idea she was the recipient of an award that would be the highlight of her career. The merchandising management professor checked her e-mail moments before she set off for the jungle and found a message from The National Retail Federation naming her the first Retail Educator of the Year. "None of my friends were there," Sternquist said.

Izzo lashes out against 'U' student fan section

Tom Izzo loves the Izzone - 90 percent of the time. It's the other 10 percent that makes him question having the Spartans' cheering section. Late in the second half of MSU's 69-58 win over Minnesota on Saturday, the Izzone started chanting "UN-EM-PLOY-MENT" to Golden Gophers head coach Dan Monson, the main reason being Minnesota's 1-10 record in the conference. Izzo said he didn't hear it in the waning minutes of the game, but he was "ticked off" when he caught word of the chant. "If I would have heard that, it would have been worth a technical to walk over and smack somebody," Izzo said.

Professor: Internet popular way to find a date

Students are highly inefficient at dating, one MSU professor says. "The efficient thing to do would be to go up to (someone they are attracted to) and say, 'excuse me, I would like to meet you,'" psychology Professor Gary Stollak said.

Editorial inaccurate; zones not explained

As I read Friday's editorial that said "Residents near commercially zoned area need to suck it up, deal with area improvements" ("In the zone" SN 2/13), I am perplexed about the inaccuracy of the basis for the opinion expressed.

Billions in tax refunds might still be available

Student workers, take note: You may be eligible to receive a long-overdue tax refund. According to the Internal Revenue Service, nearly 2 million taxpayers nationwide who did not file a 2000 income tax return have until April 15 to claim as much as $2.5 billion total in refund checks. About 81,200 Michigan residents failed to file a return in 2000, totaling $96,031 in lost funds, according to IRS data. Taxpayers have three years to claim a refund owed to them, IRS spokeswoman Sarah Wreford said.
