ASMSU warns Ithaca about ordinance

After ASMSU's struggle last semester with a modified party noise ordinance in East Lansing, student leaders are urging city council members in Ithaca, N.Y., to avoid adopting a similar policy. At its Student Assembly meeting on Thursday, MSU's undergraduate student government voted to send a letter to the Ithaca City Council saying that the East Lansing ordinance approved in the fall was harmful to student-community relations. The East Lansing City Council approved issuing up to $1,000 fines and a possible three days in jail for hosts of the gatherings with party indicators.

Izzo: Big Ten deserves credit

The Big Ten is portrayed in the national media as the black sheep of the major conferences, and Tom Izzo doesn't like it. With the Big Ten's best record, MSU (16-9 overall, 11-3 Big Ten) is nearly a lock for the NCAA Tournament.

Former 'U' president to aid Colorado investigation

MSU's 17th president will spend the next few weeks helping the University of Colorado establish whether charges that its athletics program promotes maltreatment of women are legitimate. John DiBiaggio, MSU president from 1985 to 1992, will serve as a liaison between Colorado President Betsy Hoffman, Chancellor Richard Byyny and the athletics department, Colorado spokeswoman Jeannine Malmsbury said. Byyny said DiBiaggio was an ideal candidate based on his credentials. "Dr. DiBiaggio brings an enormously distinguished background and experience that is directly pertinent to the situations we are facing," Byyny said in a statement.

Gay debate chance to expand rights

After reading the opinion page on Monday, I, too, was shocked at the choice of word Nate Allen chose to use in his editorial cartoon (SN 2/23) about the gay marriage issue. After thinking about it, I, too, realized that this is a word that people use every day as an insult to describe homosexuals and even heterosexuals.

Same-sex marriage won't alter society

Tuesday morning, President George Bush made a speech declaring that we must protect the vital and ancient institution of marriage, which is recognized by every religion (nice way to include everyone in your ridiculous stance, Dubya), because apparently he feels that same-sex marriages will ruin that institution. All one has to do is watch "The Ricki Lake Show" for about five minutes to see that degenerate men and women everywhere do a damn good job at disgracing that institution themselves.

New masters and doctorate programs in the Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies were approved by Academic Council at its Tuesday meeting and now will undergo state review. The programs are part of the integration of the departments of Agriculture and Natural Resources Education and Communication Systems, Resource Development and Park, Recreation and Tourism Resources. Richard Paulsen, the department's associate chairman, said alignment of the programs played off of their academic similarities. "What we're looking at is drawing upon some major themes in the state and looking at where they overlap and meeting the challenges of the state in the future," he said. The graduate degree programs are the first to be developed, with undergraduate academics still being worked out.
