GOP, Dem. parties work to recruit new voters

As the presidential race draws closer to its finale, both parties are working nonstop to prepare for the November election. The Democratic and Republican parties are using new strategies this year, some of which are borrowed from each other. Jeff Stormo, director of communications for the Michigan Republican Party, said this year, for the first time, they are focusing a lot of attention on registering voters. "We have been going to immigration naturalization ceremonies throughout the state, these are people who are just now American citizens," he said.

Provost proposes feedback committee

A new venue has been created for faculty to express concern about the future of liberal arts at MSU. Provost Lou Anna Simon proposed the formation of a new Committee on College Reorganization of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Tuesday's Executive Committee of Academic Council meeting. The formation of the committee is planned for the next couple of weeks, and the committee has until Oct.

Student will stay in jail during trial

A judge on Wednesday denied an MSU student accused of identity theft the chance to live at home during the duration of her trial, hindering her chances of completing credits at MSU and graduating in May. Denita Dorsey, a 22-year-old communication senior, was charged in March with four counts of fraud and identity theft, three counts of forging checks and one count of larceny.

Fraud case suspect to appear in E.L. court

The MSU student accused of stealing other students' identities to obtain more than $100,000 in credit cards, student loans, clothes and a new car is expected to appear in court today. Denita Dorsey, a 22-year-old communication senior, was charged March 26 with four counts of identity theft and fraud. Dorsey was charged again March 30 with three counts of forging checks and one count of larceny. Since receiving her charges, Dorsey has been in the Ingham County Jail in Mason on a $110,000 bond.

Every gambler needs an insurance plan in case of disaster. Senior cornerback Roderick Maples, who is known for taking risks on the field, is no exception. Only, Maples' insurance plan comes in the form of junior strong safety Eric Smith. "We kind of got attached," Maples said.

Beech named Big Ten Player of the Week

After going 7-for-14 at the plate in five games last week, senior pitcher Jessica Beech earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors. The Okemos native became the first Spartan to be named Player of the Week in 2004 by scoring a run in each matchup, bringing the Spartans' total runs to 13 while MSU's opponents scored 23 runs. MSU faces Central Michigan at 4 p.m.

Sweet bill to promote elections, activities

Two weeks ago, the ASMSU Candy Initiative passed through Student Assembly, but until today, the offices of MSU's undergraduate student government were sweet-free. The bill, which passed with one dissension, allocates $150 to buy candy for the business office on the third floor of Student Services.
