Rise in cigarette tax might not affect spending

Michigan smokers might not have to face another cigarette tax increase this year, but some local business owners and residents say any potential increase would have a minimal effect on smokers' buying habits. Doc Wallace, owner of 7-Eleven, 311 Grove St., said smokers will continue their spending habits regardless of whether there is a tax increase.

E.L. Art Festival generates record crowd, low sales

A record 80,000 attended the weekend's 41st annual East Lansing Art Festival, browsing through rainbow pottery, life-like paintings and three-dimensional media collages while sampling local humus and sandwiches as children created origami sailboats. Though large crowds swarmed the downtown, many artists said their sales were down while business owners said purchases picked up at local shops. "Saturday was the busiest it's ever been," said Leslie Donaldson, a third-year festival coordinator.

Mich. job growth boosts optimism

Lansing - With this week's announcement by Gov. Jennifer Granholm that more than 8,600 jobs will be for hire in Michigan, as the state's economy expands, some MSU students are becoming more optimistic about their employment prospects. Those sentiments come as Michigan's unemployment rate has been decreasing - from 6.9 percent in April to 6.1 percent now - the lowest it's been since August 2002. Among the additional jobs to Michigan's economy, more than 200 are coming to Mason's Michigan Packaging Company. Packaging senior Anthony Jones said the recent announcement concerning an increase in job opportunities for Michigan residents gave him added hope for the future. "Nothing is a guarantee, but it will definitely increase the possibility of students in the school to find employment after graduation," Jones said.

Convenience culture overcomplicates

Americans today detest inconvenience. In fact, in recent years we, as a nation, have become addicted to the sort of commercialism that depicts someone with the ability to drive an elephant-sized sport utility vehicle, talk on a microscopic cell phone, drink a double grande machiato with no foam, and order a super-sized drive-thru meal with a diet Coke all while using a Palm Pilot to order the latest pair of cargo pants from the Gap. Is this simply a revolution in multitasking, or have the intentions of convenience become the vehicle for a less-than-convenient lifestyle? It seems that with every new convenience innovation, the time allotted for normal everyday tasks diminishes. With the capability to conference call while flying first class to Beijing to seal the deal, employers today allow less time and/or leniency to their on-the-go employees.

Gas guzzling

Who is holding the smoking gun responsible for regular, unleaded self-serve gas prices topping $2.009 per gallon? President Bush says that if his energy bill had passed three years ago, we wouldn't be in this mess.

No end to hike in sight

With the average price of a regular gallon of unleaded gas near an all-time high, analysts say there is no reason prices will drop anytime soon, creating longer lines at local pumps as motorists bargain hunt. The average gas price in Michigan is only three cents under the all-time high of June 2000, according to a AAA Michigan survey released this week.
