East Lansing and Lansing are totally, like, not "cool." Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced on Wednesday the 20 pilot cities chosen for her "Cool Cities" initiative, which didn't include the capital city and its eastern neighbor.

COMMENTARY

Criticism of Bice column misses point

While I normally think John Bice's columns are drab and repetitive, the criticism for his last column is somewhat off ("Bice column unduly implicates religion," SN 6/1). Janice Munk implicates that Stalin, Pot and Castro relied on rational thought as opposed to religion to make their deplorable decisions, whereas most agree it is evident that they actually used neither.

WEB ONLY: Rare tiger cub dies at Potter Park Zoo

The rare Amur tiger cub born May 24 at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing died Monday. The seven-day-old female cub, born amidst heavy rain that flooded the park entrance and parking lot, might have had an infection or brain damage, according to a zoo veterinarian, adding infant mortality in Amur tiger cubs is highest during the first week of life. Last year two Amur tigers, Kendra and Charley, were given to the zoo for breeding purposes through the national Tigers Species Survival Program.

WEB ONLY: Lugnuts snake bitten early, unable to recover

Lansing - After a rocky start Thursday night, Timber Rattlers pitcher Tom Oldham got a hold of his pitches and prevented the Lugnuts from scoring.The problem was that Lansing starter Ronald Bay could not do the same thing.Bay struggled in the first two innings allowing six hits and five runs to give the Timber Rattlers all they needed for the 5-3 victory over the Lugnuts at Oldsmobile Park. With Bay's troubles on the mound early, the Timber Rattler batters took full advantage.

Potter enchants

WEB ONLY: Lugnuts hit Timber Rattlers pitching hard, win 10-6

Lansing- With the Pistons playing in game six of the Eastern Conference finals, it seemed like the crowd forgot to show up to see the Lansing Lugnuts open their series against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.The Lugnuts seemed to have forgotten to show up as well, at least until the fourth inning.Lansing fell behind early in the game before going on a scoring bonanza in the fourth inning that carried them to a 10-6 victory over the Timber Rattlers.Although Lansing (31-21) had difficulty hitting early in the game, pitching seemed to be the real problem for the Lugnuts.The struggles for Lansing starter Justin Jones continued in his fifth start for the team.
