Rollers, lace up those shoes

Whether you're the kind of bowler who has a coronary after missing a spare, or the person who's simply satisfied with avoiding the ominous gutter ball, there are plenty of locations to bowl that are right up MSU's alley. Lansing and East Lansing are home to a half-dozen bowling alleys, and among them is Marvelanes & Lounge.

Not just for old bogies

For the MSU students who enjoy the leisurely game of golf, or even the simple diversion of the less professional but ever amusing putt-putt, there are facilities close to campus that can quench the desire to hit a ball. For the golfers who take their game seriously and disdain the idea of golf accompanied by waterfalls or windmills, Forest Akers, the Red Cedar Municipal Golf Course and Hawk Hollow Golf Course and Banquet Facilities are not far away. "The East Golf Course gets a majority of students during season," said Ken Horvath, manager of Forest Akers.

Smoker inks deal with Rams

Former MSU quarterback Jeff Smoker signed a three-year contract with the St. Louis Rams on July 27, the day before the Rams' training camp was set to begin. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but Smoker said he was happy with the deal and was glad to be finished with negotiations. "It's kind of a relief to have the contract aspect finally complete," Smoker said.

A moving experience

Although Awes Mukoma Sokondo wants his five daughters to meld with American culture, the Somalian refugee isn't exactly bursting with joy over what it could mean. He's not a big fan of shorts or, for that matter, any other article that he sees as revealing clothing. "We in Somalia are Muslim," Sokondo said through a translator.

Slater leads senior-laden Spartans

It was always Jim Slater's intention to stay at MSU for four years in hopes of winning a college hockey championship with the team. Many wondered whether the forward would forego his final year of eligibility after the kind of season he wrapped up in the spring, much like goaltender Ryan Miller did after Slater's freshman year. With the opportunity to suit up as a professional player with the Atlanta Thrashers within his grasp, Slater is more optimistic about the upcoming season - as a Spartan. "With the team we have back and the freshmen coming in, this is the year to really do something in league play and be back in the national polls," Slater said.

Music venues cover all genres

It's a typical Friday night and the vibe to shake, rattle, rock and roll is running in high gear. Whether you desire to sway your hips to a jam band or grind dirty to a local hip-hop act, the surrounding areas have a venue suitable for every taste on the palate of music. But this time, instead of going to a monstrous basketball stadium or similar, music-murdering mecca - where the sound of your favorite band can be mauled by bad acoustics - why not try out a spot more comfortable, more intimate and more personal?

Old school to new, arcades are stocked

Students looking for an inexpensive way to spend an hour or so punching, shooting and dancing against virtual opponents don't have to look any further than area arcades to quench their thirst. Arcades are still an attractive way to spend some time getting away from real life and spending some time in a virtual world. From boxing to shooting games, to virtual snowboarding and fishing games, there's something for everyone at any of Lansing's three main arcades. Students who spend time at Meridian Mall can treat themselves to a little "Time Out." Located next to the food court, the 31-game center has a variety of games, including DDR Extreme, the newest version of the wildly popular dance game.

Kicking and returning a huge factor

Among the MSU football team's returning starters are both kickers, the second leading punt returner from last season, along with the leading kickoff return man. With those four returning players, the Spartans special teams should be a team strength. "Special teams can be a weapon," senior safety and captain Jason Harmon said.

Dopirak making a name for himself

As many record-breaking home runs that Lansing Lugnuts first baseman Brian Dopirak has hit this season, it's his first home run that will always stand out in his memory. That first home run at 12 years old was what made Dopirak decide that a Major League Baseball career would be in his plans. "When we had to do little career things in school, I always put down baseball player," Dopirak said.

Hangovers can create too much porcelain prayer

Oh, the power of the hangover. The pounding headache, the queasy stomach, the dizziness, the extreme sensitivity to light and sound and the general overwhelming feeling of regret - all part of nature's punishment for having a little too much fun the night before. Although most people know drinking in moderation is best, many get caught up in the moment and can't resist the temptation to tip back a few too many with close friends. After making late-night prayers to the "porcelain god" or the nearby trash can, some students try any hangover remedy to end their misery. Sitting on a blue couch at an off-campus party spot, then-music education freshman Paul Kelly said the sign of a bad hangover is waking up the next day still drunk.

Area coffee shops are all the buzz

Whether imported from Colombian hills or brewed in Lansing kitchens, the bitter-sweet taste of coffee has always been popular - a particular favorite to late-night studiers. Some prefer the warm liquid as a morning boost, while others use it as a midnight drug.

Number of local drunken driving arrests climbs

Contrary to statewide statistics released July 12 indicating a drop in the incidence of drunken driving arrests, East Lansing saw a 40 percent increase from 2002 to 2003, up from 268 arrests to 376. State figures, released by the Michigan State Police, indicate the number of arrests for drunken driving over the same period went down 4 percent, from 57,789 to 55,746. The higher local figures are indicative of more stringent police enforcement, East Lansing Police Sgt.

Find peace, serenity here

The face of a stressed person is quite an ugly one. Twisted in wrinkly frowns from neck aches, back pain or migraines, the stressee is usually unaware of tension and anxieties until they slap her or him right in the face.
