Lugnuts lose slugfest, 15-10

Lansing - With temperatures in the upper 80s and the wind blowing toward the outfield, hitters for the Lansing Lugnuts took advantage of an ideal day for swinging the bats. Unfortunately the Lansing (12-14) pitching staff suffered as a result of the conditions, losing 15-10 to the South Bend Silver Hawks. "It's one of those hard days with the wind blowing out, any ball that was up in the air had a chance to go out," Lansing manager Julio Garcia said.

Annual race 'celebrates life,' raises money

Ellen's Race might have officially ended last summer, but the spirit and emotion behind the annual fund-raiser continues as Ele's Race debuts Sunday at Pinecrest Elementary in East Lansing. "We're hoping they will take this race and celebrate the life of a loved one who has died and use that for the inspiration for completing this race," co-director Lori Bosch said. As a nonprofit organization, Ele's Place helps more than 190 children each week.

Local hip-hoppers look for place to perform, call own

A local hip-hop artist is questioning the loyalty of Lansing-area venues toward the promotion and support of its urban music community while venue owners defend the variety of their lineups. MC 3rd Deggree and DJ Donnie D will headline a live hip-hop show Saturday, and are hopeful of drawing a large crowd, in order to prove the demand for live and local hip-hop shows exceeds the number of shows held at Lansing-area venues. Zimbabwe colleges focus of 'U' lecture

Gordon Jeranyama, the Bursar of Chinhoyi University of Technology in Zimbabwe, will give a brown bag speech at noon July 29 in room 201 of the International Center. Jeranyama will speak about the new universities in Zimbabwe and the financial and other challenges they experience.

New beginning, sign for tainted apt. complex

The sign outside Melrose Apartments might be the most noticeable change at the East Lansing housing complex, but it's the new internal security policies that will more likely affect students. On Wednesday, the Melrose Apartments sign, located at 16789 Chandler Road, was removed and replaced with one reading, "The Landings at Chandler Crossing." The sign switch reflects the final step in a change of ownership that saw Atlantis Development Group, Ltd.

Trustees to appoint VP of research, grad studies

The MSU Board of Trustees is holding a meeting today at 10 a.m. to vote on the appointment of a new vice president for research and graduate studies and the sale of a Ludington property. The candidate for the vice president position, Ian Gray, is the interim vice provost and director of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station.

Leadership Program provides insight

Although textbooks explain how stars are comprised of burning hydrogen and helium, one American-Indian legend describes how a coyote etched a pattern into the night sky with flower petals. Shirley Brauker, Moon Bear Pottery store owner in Coldwater and an Odawa tribe member, told the legend to a classroom of American-Indian high school students Tuesday afternoon at Berkey Hall.

Application for new E.L. housing revoked

An application from Campus Village Properties to renovate part of the Ramada Inn property, 1100 Trowbridge Road, was revoked at an East Lansing City Council meeting on Tuesday, city officials said. "I believe the developer felt it was unlikely to be approved," planning and zoning administrator Bob Owen said. Community members were strongly opposed to the plans, which proposed a three-story building containing 65 student-rented apartments housing 204 students.

E.L. businesses prepare for development

Businesses on Abbott Road and Grand River Avenue are cleaning offices and drawing up blueprints to make way for East Lansing's newest downtown development. The $180 million project, called City Center 2, is expected to take three years to build.

Radunske leaving, Lerg coming to 'U'

The MSU hockey team lost one of its forwards to the NHL this week but added another player to the 2004 recruiting class. In the same week that forward Brock Radunske signed a three-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers to forego his senior season, the Spartans signed forward Bryan Lerg to a National Letter of Intent. Lerg, 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds, spent the past two years in Ann Arbor as part of the U.S.

Brown's USA dreams alive and well in N.J.

MSU sophomore guard Shannon Brown is one of 13 finalists for the 12-man roster of the 2004 USA Basketball World Championship For Young Men Qualifying Team. The players will continue to practice at the New Jersey Nets facility in East Rutherford, N.J., until Friday, when the team will be finalized by cutting one player. "I think we'll have a pretty good team," USA and Oklahoma head coach Kelvin Sampson said in a written statement.

Site hopes for Med School

Though MSU and Spectrum Health officials still are negotiating the financial and operational issues involved in moving MSU's medical school to Grand Rapids, a building site for the campus in West Michigan might be opening up. Demolition began Monday of 45 homes in a six-acre block of property near the collection of Grand Rapids' health care buildings known as the "medical mile."
