Smoker signs 3-year deal

Former MSU quarterback Jeff Smoker signed a three-year contract with the St. Louis Rams Tuesday, the day before the Rams' training camp was set to begin. The terms of the contract were not disclosed but Smoker said that he was happy with the deal and glad to be finished with negotiations. "It's kind of a relief to have the contract aspect finally complete," Smoker said.

Retired prof appointed to research job

A new MSU intellectual integrity officer stepped into position Wednesday to replace David Wright, the former administrator who resigned June 18 in protest of Provost Lou Anna Simon's selection as MSU's next president. Loran Bieber, who retired from MSU in 2002, is an internationally renowned MSU professor emeritus and biochemist who started at MSU in 1965 and served for 18 years as associate dean for research in the College of Human Medicine.

Site needs change to host med college

Though a developer would like MSU officials to consider his Grand Rapids property for the expansion of the university's medical school into the city, city planning officials there say major changes would be needed if the site was chosen. MSU officials say they have not looked at specific sites since May, when the MSU Board of Trustees voted to move the majority of the College of Human Medicine to Grand Rapids.

Court rules against MHSAA again

The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that the current schedule of Michigan sports discriminates against female athletes. The ruling made by a three-judge panel said that the Michigan High School Athletic Association, based in East Lansing, violated the equal protection clause of the U.S.
