Peoples' relationships with their pets will be discussed at the fourth annual MSU Human-Animal Bond Initiative conference Thursday and Friday at the Kellogg Center. The conference, titled "The Science Behind our Relationship with Animals: Cuddle a Critter and Call Me in the Morning," will help attendees understand how humans who interact with animals find enrichment in their lives. The event is sponsored by the MSU College of Nursing, the MSU Human-Animal Bond Initiative and the MSU School of Social Work.

Notre Dame fans should toughen up

When I read what the four Saint Mary's women had to say ("Rude 'U' fans give Notre Dame supporters bad time" SN 9/21), I had to laugh. As a former Saint Mary's College student, I can say firsthand that they are not a part of the Notre Dame family, so I'm not sure why they were so offended.

Take a stand

If you're worried about not having a job after college, then do something about it. If you think the economy is in the tank, do something about it.

Critic shares favorite moments with celebrities

My first encounter with celebrity came when I was only 3 years old. I was vacationing with my family in Washington, D.C., when my mom, with those keen radar eyes of hers, spotted Jon Voight on the steps of our nation's Capitol.

Kevin Nealon, Jim Wiggins to perform in Lansing

Television comedy will make its way onto the live stage as one area comedy club will feature comics from two highly watched comedy shows - "Saturday Night Live" and "Last Comic Standing: The Search for the Funniest Person In America." With nine consecutive seasons to his name, Kevin Nealon is the longest-running "Saturday Night Live" cast member to date. Nealon said his comedy career started when he copied jokes from the backs of magazines and relayed them to friends. "I would memorize the jokes and then kind of personalize them as if I was making them up," he said.

Swing time

Peggy Fitzpatrick could help determine the outcome of the upcoming presidential election. The 47-year-old Hillsdale resident fits the typical description of a woman voter - she's concerned about Michigan's sluggish economy, the rising cost of health care, and the tough job market. As an unemployed human resource professional, she's seen the impact of the state's economic slump firsthand.

Recent rape cases at 'U' raise issue of assault reports

A series of alleged rapes on MSU's campus has brought the process of handling reported sexual assaults recent publicity. After a sexual assault is reported, a variety of counselors, detectives and prosecutors are called into action, as an original police report branches out to various departments across the university and community, officials said. An overwhelming number of sexual assaults are not reported at all, both nationally and at MSU, said Dennis Martell, Olin Health Center health educator. Many people who have been assaulted but have not made reports come to Olin Health Center's HIV Education, Testing and Counseling Program, Martell said. "They want to find out what has happened anonymously," Martell said. If Olin workers suspect a student has been sexually assaulted, they offer themselves as a gateway to other services, such as counseling, Martell said. "Often people don't seek counseling for months or even years," said Holly Rosen, director of MSU Safe Place.

E.L. revamp plan to be focus of 2nd 'Cool Cities' application

East Lansing isn't officially "cool," but city leaders hope their plans for the Cedar Village area will intensify its crusade to become a hip town. The proposed 36-acre redevelopment project is being considered as the main focus for the city's second "Cool Cities" application. The land, which is bounded on the west and east by Bogue Street and Hagadorn Road, and on the north and south by Grand River Avenue and the Red Cedar River, would be replaced with new housing and retail facilities. "This new project is more of a holistic cool city development," said Lori Mullins, East Lansing Cool Cities Partnership chairwoman.

Not so fine

A punishment is useless if it has no effect on the punished. The Federal Communications Commission imposed a $550,000 fine on Viacom Inc. on Wednesday for the brief display of Janet Jackson's breast during the Super Bowl halftime show last February. The FCC justified the fine by saying that no television show has ever received as many complaints from the American public as did the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show.

The opportunity to run up and down Old College Field sporting the Green and White has been a long time coming for Lauren Zacharski. In between transferring schools after her sophomore year and a serious knee injury, the women's soccer senior forward had to put her college soccer career aside. Zacharski originally played for Georgia during her first and second years of college.

Bush's stance on abortion is logical

In reading T.J. Jourian's column ("''W' is for Women' slogan comparable to ''C' is for Contradiction'" SN 9/20), one of the first things that jumped out at me was the statement, "Why are there so many women-led organizations against the Shrub President?" This statement interested me because I am assuming he was trying to make it support his point, and I think it did the exact opposite. Being a woman and a Bush supporter myself, I automatically had the response of "Why are there so many women that are against Kerry as well?" Anyone can have a one-sided view.

'Oklahoma' a beautiful picture of Midwest, America's culture

New York has its glitz. California has movie stars. But the states in the middle of the country - such as Oklahoma - have been largely dismissed as "simple." Not anymore. Strapped up in boots, a gun and a hat, cowboy star Curly, played by Jeremiah James, dances his way into country girl Laurey's heart and the hearts of audience members during the musical "Oklahoma!," on stage this weekend at Wharton Center. Laurey (Julie Burdick) scornfully turns her head at Curly's initial request to take her to the box-social dance later that night because she considers him too "cheeky and confident." To make him jealous, she promises to go with Jud, a farmer, but later changes her mind.
