College voters will decide president

As an alumna, I'm very concerned about the youth vote - particularly the MSU vote - in this election year, which will, beyond a shadow of a doubt, represent a turning point in the history of our country.

COMMENTARY

In no rush

The tennis court tailgating situation at MSU ranges in opinion from vaguely problematic to the forefront of many minds, but in both cases, rushing a quick fix to the MSU Board of Trustees would be unwise. ASMSU, MSU's undergraduate student government, is technically the official student voice in college administrative proceedings, but there are times where the general student population might not share its exact views.

Walk raises heart disease awareness

Despite the cold air and the early morning hour, students and area residents gathered Saturday morning to walk and demonstrate their solidarity against heart disease. Survivors of strokes and heart disease dotted the crowd in red caps, many wearing tags on their backs reading, "I'm walking for me." The annual American Heart Association fund-raiser had two goals - to raise money for research and to raise awareness.

COMMENTARY

Motor or voter

It's easy to vote. But for college students, it could be easier. Unless the numbers outside your front door are identical to the address on your driver's license, you're the victim of a voting obstacle. A raw perspective on civic duty would tell us to vote where we live and live where we vote.

The MSU women's tennis team ended tournament play Sunday in the last round of The Yonex Spartan Cup, held at MSU. Sophomore Sarah Andrews beat Eastern Michigan's Laura Fernandez in the B flight singles final to win the championship.

Word on the street

"It's high stakes in that if Bush wins, we'll keep fighting this war. The lives of our citizens are only at stake when people can't afford health care.

Invite-only needed for Bush daughters

From the editorial "Moore, please" (SN 9/24), "There were a great number of Democrats and undecided voters who would have liked to hear what the Bush daughters had to say when they were on campus, but it was a Republicans-only event.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Bush, Kerry continue to stress importance of fighting terrorism

During a rally in Maine last week, President Bush reaffirmed his approach to the war on terrorism by explaining his reason for invading Afghanistan and Iraq. "Since the terrible morning of September the 11th, 2001, we have fought the terrorists across the earth, not for pride, not for power, but because the lives of our citizens are at stake," Bush said during his speech, drawing applause from the crowd. Similarly, Democratic presidential candidate Sen.

VOLLEYBALL

Spartans winless for second straight week; Wallin injured

Walking away with losses to both No. 1 Minnesota and Iowa this weekend would have been disappointing enough for the MSU volleyball team. But now the Spartans (5-5 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) must wait for news on whether junior middle Megan Wallin will be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. "We're trying to determine whether it was an ACL tear," head coach Chuck Erbe said.

FOOTBALL

Cool comeback

Bloomington, Ind. - As MSU's offense battled inconsistency and turnovers in the first half against Indiana, its defense held firm, eventually carrying the Spartans to a comeback win against Indiana. Sophomore quarterback Drew Stanton, with his spectacular running performance, was the face of MSU's 30-20 win, but the defense made his triumphant story possible. Coming out of the locker room at halftime, MSU (2-2 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) was losing, 20-7.

Order sponsors African dance class

Concentrating on their reflections, seven dancers moved across a room toward a mirror, swinging their hips, waving their arms and kicking their feet to the beat of a tribal drum. An African dance class, sponsored by a local chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, was held Friday at IM Sports-Circle to conclude a week of activities. "Some dances are from the west and some specifically Ghana," said Ayana Gwin, dance instructor and member of the order.
