Annual Dino Dash draws runners, money

Dressed in high-cut navy blue running shorts and a bright purple tank top, Ron Heames, 60, bounced in the cold, frosty Sunday morning air as he stretched in preparation for the 20th annual Michigan State University Federal Credit Union Dinosaur Dash. Heames, an Ann Arbor resident, has run the race for eight years.

Debate panelist wrong, Kerry's performance on Thursday night 'not embarrassing at all'

In regard to Andrew Sivak's comment "Panel: Candidates redundant during first square-off" (SN 10/1) about John Kerry's performance in the first presidential debate, I don't know what you were watching, but Kerry's performance was not embarrassing at all. He cleared up a lot of the conservative hype about flip-flopping by being consistent in his responses and he made some excellent points that President Bush could not handle.

Signing up

In a country that values freedom, it is hard to believe that residents of some cities - East Lansing included - cannot show their support via yard signs for a candidate prior to 30 days before the election.

Talks of reinstating draft spur student, local reaction

As military personnel continue to battle insurgents in Iraq, some students are becoming increasingly concerned about two Congressional bills that aim to change the national draft policy. The legislation, introduced in both the Senate and the House of Representatives in January 2003, calls for the equal eligibility of all citizens aged 18-26 to serve in the military if a draft is implemented.

College Dems, GOP forgot about Nader

The debate between MSU College Democrats and Republicans is a good representation of exactly what is wrong with the real debates between presidential candidates. The lack of a voice beyond those of the duopoly will result in many important issues not being addressed. The exclusion of a representative for Ralph Nader expresses the organizations' desire to limit the voices voters hear, and the choices that they have on Nov.

At a loss

Iowa City, Iowa - MSU's performance against Iowa on Saturday was so bad that head coach John L.

VOLLEYBALL

Errors amount to team's weekend split

Disappointing was an understatement for head coach Chuck Erbe after the MSU volleyball team (6-6 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) fell to Purdue on Saturday. Heartbreaking was more like it as MSU lost, 3-2. "The single most disappointing thing about this is, we should've won this match," Erbe said.

BASKETBALL

Students brave wind, cold for chance at lower-bowl tickets

More than 400 multi-colored tents speckled Munn field Saturday night as devoted students sporting hats, coats and gloves waited to receive their coveted basketball tickets in the windy, bitter cold. "I'm wearing a fleece, a hoodie, my winter jacket, a long-sleeve T-shirt and a short-sleeve T-shirt," said finance junior Michelle Lee as she shivered.

SOCCER

One goal wins game

Junior midfielder Ryan McMahen scored the lone goal of the game in the first half as the MSU men's soccer team snapped its two-game losing streak and evened its Big Ten record at 1-1 with a 1-0 win over Northwestern on Sunday at Old College Field. Sophomore goaltender Jason Tillman stopped two Northwestern shots and preserved the game in the second half with the Wildcats pressing for the tying goal. "It was his best game," MSU head coach Joe Baum said.

ASMSU promotes safe tailgating

If you've been dehydrated during tailgates and are tired of waiting 30 minutes in line for rest room facilities, ASMSU is trying to help. MSU's undergraduate student government members said they don't want to limit students' pregame fun, but they are most concerned with compromised safety caused by binge drinking. ASMSU passed a bill at its general assembly meeting Thursday with tailgating recommendations to be later passed to the MSU Board of Trustees. The recommendations might be implemented as soon as Saturday's home football game against Illinois. "The issue in this bill is safety," said Derek Wallbank, representative for the Council for Students with Disabilities.
