Officials plan response to computer disasters

Local government officials are forming their own rescue team to save their computer systems in the event of a catastrophe. East Lansing City Council voted at its work session Tuesday to approve a formalized relationship between local jurisdictions to share technology resources during disasters. The Mid-Michigan Information Technology Mutual Aid Agreement allows cities to share telephones, hardware, software, employees or facilities if a disaster situation were to harm a municipality's computer system, said Alan McCarrick, East Lansing Information Systems Administrator. "The goal is to help keep everybody up and running," he said. An informal collaboration between Lansing, Meridian Township and Ingham, Clinton and Eaton counties has existed for years, but the formal agreement is intended to inform the public and officials of their continuing discussion. Meridian Township and Ingham County officials also approved the aid agreement, McCarrick said. Although the agreement refers mainly to disaster planning, McCarrick said there are day-to-day situations where the sharing of resources come in to play.

Play tackles abortion, morals

Once again drama ensemble Icarus Falling will attempt to enlighten the Lansing audience, but this time with the far-from-entertaining, but all-too-real subject of abortion. "Keely and Du," is what some critics have considered a "provocative drama" or "playing with fire," but to Icarus Falling director Fred Longacre, it's a necessary reality check. "It's a hot-button issue, but any issue right now that causes people to wonder about their morals is like that," Longacre said.

Tobacco companies not problem for 'U'

Regarding Mike Townshend's column "Joe Camel should answer for our generation's tobacco addiction" (SN 10/13). While I agree with your end message - that anti-smoking campaigns should find a new tactic - I disagree with many of your more specific points.

Let the games begin

If the adage "safety in numbers" is accurate, Lansing's ConClave is a sort of Fort Knox for local connoisseurs of science fiction and fantasy literature, art and gaming. Each year, the convention draws hundreds to Lansing's Holiday Inn South and provides an opportunity for avid fans to intermingle.

'Team America' disappoints

One perk to being a top-notch Hollywood celeb is the no-nudity clause. If Julia Roberts doesn't want to bare it all, she just slaps a sine qua non in her $20 million contract. Obviously, marionettes aren't afforded that privilege. There's a scene in "Team America: World Police" where two puppets, standing on a sunset-lit bluff, come to terms with their romantic feelings for each other. "If you promise never to die, I will have sex with you right now," says one character. Posed with this situation, naive audience members are thinking: "They're not going to do it.

Teague's work ethic sets tone

When head coach John L. Smith publicly scolded the Spartans for poor practice habits earlier this season, he probably wasn't talking about junior running back Jason Teague. "He's one of the hardest-working guys involved in the program," running backs coach Reggie Mitchell said. Teague's work ethic is a big reason why he has been MSU's starting running back all season, which is a minor surprise considering the sometimes-brilliant performance of redshirt freshman Jehuu Caulcrick. Caulcrick can be a bruising runner who consistently gains yards when he gets in a groove, as in the fourth quarter of MSU's 38-25 win against Illinois last Saturday.

Flats Grill steals the show at home cooking event

The Breslin Center transformed into a makeshift kitchen Tuesday night. A professional home economist prepared 12 recipes in front of guests who followed along with their own Taste of Home Cooking School Recipe Collection. As Margaret McCutcheon, a senior territory manager for Homemaker Ventures, Inc., prepared the dishes, there were many "oohs and aahs" from the crowd. The Taste of Home Cooking School in East Lansing was one of 40 shows that McCutcheon attends per year.

Making votes count

Tom Nighswander used to be just like millions of Americans. The 36-year-old MSU graduate was bitter about the state of the country's political system, yet he was pessimistic about the ability of one person to change it. And the 2000 presidential election fiasco did little to calm his unease. "The 2000 election made people aware of the potential for mistakes or fraud in the election process," said Nighswander, who lives in Lansing.
