COMMENTARY

Christians deserve better than ridicule

I am tired of Christians being stereotyped as the ignorant, hate-filled neanderthals of American society. I am particularly incensed at the articles that John Bice spews forth from his bilic mouth on a weekly basis, discounting Christian views on abortion, calling them "doltish," and "faith-spawned drivel." If Bice has some enlightened knowledge on when the exact point of personhood is attained, I'm all ears.

Buckeyes pose major threat after emotional 3OT loss to U-M

Ohio State: Sleeping giant or so-so team with a big name? The Buckeyes (5-3 overall, 2-3 Big Ten), who lost their first three conference games for the first time since 1988, have yet to win a conference road game and are last in the Big Ten in total offense. MSU (4-4, 3-2) is not looking at Ohio State's mediocre record or average statistics. "You got to come out like you're playing the best team in the country because they still got those athletes, they still got guys capable of killing you, so we got to be ready," senior safety Jason Harmon said. While the Spartans prepared for Ohio State this week, they were still trying to shake off the nightmares of the 45-37 triple overtime loss to the rival Wolverines.

ASMSU determines funding for retreat

ASMSU finalized funding for its annual retreat this year, but the process has some members concerned with how closely representatives look at the bills they pass. "It concerns me a lot," said Patricia Smith, Student Assembly internal vice chairperson, about funding for the retreat passing through both ASMSU assemblies without any debate on the money allocated. "They spent more time debating fishing than debating spending $4,000 on a retreat," she said, referring to Student Assembly's meeting last Thursday, when it defeated a bill to look at changing an ordinance that bans fishing on the Red Cedar River. Both ASMSU assemblies combined to allocate up to $5,450 for the retreat, which allows ASMSU representatives to work on team-building efforts and get acquainted with staff employees they might only see in meetings, Smith said. She added that Academic Assembly has already spent a large portion of its budget on the Associated Michigan Universities Conference held at MSU in September.
