High gas prices force close of station

For the past eight years, Julie Fedewa and her husband have operated a 40-year-old family gas and service station, but elevated gas prices will force them to sell the store by the end of December. Instability in Nigeria, damage from the hurricanes in Florida and the occupation of Iraq are contributing to rising gas prices, said Fedewa, co-owner of Marathon service station, 1198 S.

Minnesota must forget U-M loss again to play Spartans

There is one parallel between MSU's matchup with Minnesota on Saturday and the Spartans' win against the Gophers last year that is working in MSU's favor. Minnesota lost its lead in the fourth quarter against Michigan last year the week before hosting MSU.

ASMSU raises issues with new residential college

ASMSU has questions they want answered about the proposed new residential college. To voice its concerns and get answers, the Academic Assembly of MSU's undergraduate student government passed a bill Tuesday night listing unresolved issues with the proposed college, tentatively named the Nelson Mandela College. The bill calls for a letter to be sent to Marcellette Williams, chairwoman of the New Residential College Program Planning Group and President-designate Lou Anna Simon.

Column on rape in need of reprinting

In light of the frighteningly high number of rapes that have occurred on campus in the last few months, I feel that it would be fitting and perhaps beneficial, to reprint an editorial column that I clipped from your paper.

Making votes count

Tom Nighswander used to be just like millions of Americans. The 36-year-old MSU graduate was bitter about the state of the country's political system, yet he was pessimistic about the ability of one person to change it. And the 2000 presidential election fiasco did little to calm his unease. "The 2000 election made people aware of the potential for mistakes or fraud in the election process," said Nighswander, who lives in Lansing.

Flats Grill steals the show at home cooking event

The Breslin Center transformed into a makeshift kitchen Tuesday night. A professional home economist prepared 12 recipes in front of guests who followed along with their own Taste of Home Cooking School Recipe Collection. As Margaret McCutcheon, a senior territory manager for Homemaker Ventures, Inc., prepared the dishes, there were many "oohs and aahs" from the crowd. The Taste of Home Cooking School in East Lansing was one of 40 shows that McCutcheon attends per year.

Teague's work ethic sets tone

When head coach John L. Smith publicly scolded the Spartans for poor practice habits earlier this season, he probably wasn't talking about junior running back Jason Teague. "He's one of the hardest-working guys involved in the program," running backs coach Reggie Mitchell said. Teague's work ethic is a big reason why he has been MSU's starting running back all season, which is a minor surprise considering the sometimes-brilliant performance of redshirt freshman Jehuu Caulcrick. Caulcrick can be a bruising runner who consistently gains yards when he gets in a groove, as in the fourth quarter of MSU's 38-25 win against Illinois last Saturday.

'Team America' disappoints

One perk to being a top-notch Hollywood celeb is the no-nudity clause. If Julia Roberts doesn't want to bare it all, she just slaps a sine qua non in her $20 million contract. Obviously, marionettes aren't afforded that privilege. There's a scene in "Team America: World Police" where two puppets, standing on a sunset-lit bluff, come to terms with their romantic feelings for each other. "If you promise never to die, I will have sex with you right now," says one character. Posed with this situation, naive audience members are thinking: "They're not going to do it.
