2 men plead guilty in 7-Eleven shooting

Two men arrested in connection with the killing of a Lansing man outside an East Lansing 7-Eleven in February pled guilty Monday, but only one faces murder charges. Hatarie Deamont McCorkle, 29, pled guilty in Lansing's 30th Judicial Circuit Court to second degree murder, and Eric Charles Gordy, 35, pled guilty to fleeing and eluding a police officer. The pleas for both Detroit men came after the case went through three judges, four lawyers and more than seven months in court. Ingham County Chief Trial Attorney Michael Ferency said he had been discussing a plea bargain for about a week with the men's attorneys, but nothing was certain until everyone was in the courtroom Monday. Joanne Adam and Paul Toman were appointed to represent the men in June, after original attorneys David Feinberg and Hugh Clarke withdrew from the case, citing a "breakdown in the relationships with their clients." In addition, Judge Thomas Brown passed the case to Judge Paula Manderfield because his schedule was full this fall. Judge Richard Ball handled the case in East Lansing's 54-B District Court. McCorkle could face 25 to 40 years in prison for shooting Joseph Lavon Parker on Feb.
