Officers train for chaos

In two single-file lines, police officers raced up to demonstrators, dragging them away one-by-one and placing their hands in zip ties to keep them restrained. Protesters continued to scream in windy weather as officers arrested them and took their mugshots. This was not a group of workers fighting for a new contract or a better benefits package - they were members of the MSU community, acting as rioters and protesters to help police officers during their Small Squad Tactics training program. Friday marked the last day of the training, in which officers from local and Big Ten university police departments came to learn maneuvers on how to deal with civil disturbances.

Seniors say: Not in our house

"And David put his hand in the bag and took out a stone and slung it. And it struck the Philistine on the head and he fell to the ground." I should have known Saturday's game was going to be a strange one.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Libertarian Party members look to future in aftermath of presidential election

Former Democratic candidate John Kerry wasn't the only one who lost the presidential election to President Bush. Behind the limelight, third-party candidates fought the same fight and suffered the same loss as Kerry did, and among them was Michael Badnarik of the Libertarian Party. Members of the Libertarian Party met Saturday night to celebrate what they described as a success. "We are the new refounding fathers and mothers and we will restore liberty," Badnarik said during a speech given to about 50 Libertarians gathered at the Hampton Inn & Suites, 2200 Hampton Place in Okemos.

Spartans to face Izzo's alma mater

Pardon Tom Izzo if he's not overly excited to coach against his alma mater, Northern Michigan on Sunday in MSU's second exhibition game. "It's a little hard to be as excited as I'd like to be because I don't feel as excited right now," Izzo said Wednesday after MSU beat Grand Valley State 77-62. It was a victory for the Spartans, but in some ways, it was a poorly played victory.

'U' observes religious holiday

White lights wound around the banisters in the McDonel Hall Kiva twinkled in the darkened room as rhythmic drumming and a lilting pipe filled the air. Women dressed in colorful choli suits of blue, green and pink practiced a dance, their arms swaying in unison to a slight tinkling of bells. About 55 people gathered Thursday night to celebrate and learn about the Diwali holiday in an event hosted by the Coalition of Indian Undergraduate Students, Asha for Education, the MSU India Club and McGlobe International Club. Diwali, a festival of lights, is celebrated by people who practice Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism.

Spikers set for 2-game homestand

The MSU volleyball team is gearing up to face Iowa at 7 p.m. today and No. 5 Minnesota at 8 p.m. Saturday in home matches that the team said could boost its chances of making the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans (10-12 overall, 5-9 Big Ten) must win their match over Iowa (9-17 overall, 1-13 Big Ten) to make up for their loss earlier in the season, head coach Chuck Erbe said. "This is one you look at the schedule and say you should win," he said. Erbe said Monday the team's goal is to win four of its last six matches in a quest to earn a postseason bid. Minnesota (22-4 overall, 11-3 Big Ten) will present more of a challenge because of the amount of experience and the record they have upheld so far throughout the season. Senior outside hitter Diana Steplyk said she hasn't taken in the magnitude of Minnesota, saying MSU is capable of pulling a win against the Golden Gophers. "They are a great team, but they've been beat, just like every other team in this conference," Steplyk said. Despite the youth of the team, the Spartans have been able, at times, to show performances beyond their years, which they will have to show again over these last weekends of play.
