There is no practice more inane, no tradition more vapid and no photo opportunity more whorish than the annual Thanksgiving "pardoning" of the White House turkey. Each Thanksgiving since the days of Harry Truman, the president "pardons" a turkey to a presumably pastoral life of pecking at the ground and looking at things around the farm or forest that move.
East Lansing and MSU police have become crazy with the number of minor in possession tickets they are willing to distribute when there are many other problems they could focus on. Police around campus want to blame drinking as the problem for numerous crimes committed on or near campus.
First you crawl, then you walk, then you run. Right now, MSU's offense is running. It has become a complete package that attacks defenses through the air and on the ground. That is a turnaround from last season, when the offense was more one-dimensional, usually beating defenses with the pass. There are varying explanations for the staggering potency of MSU's offense lately.
The MSU men's soccer team will travel to Tulsa for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament after coming off a stellar performance in the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans (12-6-1) played solid defense en route to their first ever Big Ten Tournament Championship giving up just one goal in the three games they played in Ann Arbor last weekend. The Spartans will meet the Golden Hurricanes (10-6-3) for the first time in school history.
Give Penn State a little credit. With the weight of a six-game losing streak on the Nittany Lions' shoulders while they played at Indiana, probably the least-inspiring atmosphere in the Big Ten, they took the field with intensity and it paid off. Penn State beat Indiana 22-18 and the Nittany Lions goal line stand to preserve the win near the end of the game further proved they are not giving up yet. MSU's one-game season starts Saturday in Happy Valley.
The No. 8 Spartans field hockey team will have a shot at a national championship this weekend with their second visit to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. The team meets No.

A Marathon of Majors will be held from 5-7 p.m. today on the first floor of Bessey Hall. Academic advisers from about 15 MSU colleges will be available to assist students in exploring majors, meeting major and college requirements, exploring internship and career information, transferring credits, studying abroad and tutoring options. Other groups, including the MSU Counseling Center and the Writing Center will also provide information. "Usually, students have to go from college to college to gather information about the colleges, but with this event, they're able to do that in one night," said Rosemarie Handley, advising coordinator for the Undergraduate University Division.
East Lansing residents and MSU students questioned the feasibility of redeveloping the Cedar Village area during the East Village Master Plan Team meeting on Wednesday night. Criticism ranged from the density of the area, lack of student representation of the planning team and having the property owners of that team. Kevin Beard, chair of the planning team, said several of the concerns were addressed during past meetings, but there were some fresh points. He said city officials are still crunching numbers in order to determine how to make the project a success.
Police arrested a man early Wednesday morning believed to be connected to a series of home intrusions that have occurred during the last couple weeks. There have been a handful of home invasions in recent weeks, said East Lansing police Capt.
It has been a long season thus far for the MSU hockey team's top line of seniors Mike Lalonde and Jim Slater and sophomore Tommy Goebel. The line lit up scoreboards all over the CCHA last season, accounting for 44 points (22 goals and 22 assists) in the first 10 games of the year. In the first 10 games of this season however, the trio has struggled, combining for only 17 points in 10 games. If the Spartans are to compete with No.
