Theater, music depts. debut 'Carousel'

For the first time, MSU Department of Theatre and the MSU School of Music will collaborate to bring Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's classic "Carousel" - a musical that embodies and challenges dance, opera and music. E.L. businesses look for niche in evolving market

Along Grand River Avenue, in the heart of downtown East Lansing, a wide variety of business and shopping is offered to consumers, even as the mix of stores constantly changes. Corporations such as Gap and Starbucks Coffee mingle with small, independent businesses that sell everything from posters and vintage clothing to used books and music. At a time when it seems like mom-and-pop establishments are fading away, downtown business owners and community planners say the longevity of such independently-owned businesses sustains the city's individuality. Organizations focus on making city aware of homeless problem

Each morning, hundreds of Lansing-area homeless people wake up preparing to face another day of searching for a way out of their situation. As they leave their temporary shelters, they face social stereotypes and other factors that make it difficult to improve themselves. And 28-year-old Ezra Nelson has had to do just that. Nelson came from California to Michigan in 2001 after meeting a woman on the Internet.

As its lights flashed and siren blared, an East Lansing Fire Department's ambulance sliced through the crowd of football fans on their way to Spartan Stadium on Saturday. After reaching a popular campus party spot, East Lansing firefighters and paramedics Alan VanStempvoort and Dan Renner hopped out of the ambulance to tend to a tailgater.

Poetry kicks off heritage celebration

A poetry collective called Batey Urbano excitedly warmed up in a back room of the Erickson Kiva before several Latino and Chicano urban poets hit the stage to perform poetry with a purpose. "Is-La Mind," or "Ease The Mind," showcased the Batey Urbano poets as part of Puerto Rican Culture Week, put on by the Puerto Rican Student Alliance this week. "Our performances are a collaboration of our culture and hip-hop," Chicagoan group member Jiovani Vargas said. Batey Urbano is an outlet for people to express themselves, Vargas said.
