The No. 9 MSU women's basketball team used an early second-half burst to take over the game against Wisconsin and held off a late charge by the Badgers to get their seventh straight home win, 74-66. I would like to respond to Chris Rinard's ridiculous take on the admissions process to the Business College ("Admissions process overly selective," SN 1/11). The arguments in this article are laughable, and I am appalled that a student at MSU could be so naive as to make statements of this nature.

E.L. man stands up for equality

Paul Downie's fight for equality began with one small sip. It was in 1952 that the young Army serviceman was sitting at an Augusta, Ga., bus terminal waiting for his bus home to metro Detroit. There he noticed two adjacent drinking fountains, accompanied with overhead signs marked "white" and "colored." "It made me angry," Downie said. Feeling the need to make a statement, he got up and took a drink from the fountain marked "colored," then pulled up a chair in the waiting room designated for blacks. The other white passengers in the station stared at him in disbelief. "If looks could kill, oh my," Downie said.

The winner of the 15th annual Word of the Year contest was definitely not too close to call, an MSU linguistics professor said. The American Dialect Society voted "red state, blue state, purple state" as the most prominent phrase in the country's vocabulary in 2004. Joe Crawford, who is transferring from the University of Kentucky, will not be given a release from his National Letter of Intent by the school. This means that Crawford, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound guard, who is considering MSU as his next school, would only be eligible to play basketball for one-and-a-half years. "We've communicated to the Crawford family that we expect him to honor his commitment," Scott Stricklin, Kentucky's assistant athletic director for media relations, said of the former Detroit Renaissance standout.
