Columnist is misled about education

Bryan Dahl needs to do his homework before criticizing teachers' unions and advocating school vouchers and charter schools ("Teacher's unions are to blame for lax improvement in public schools" SN 12/1). In 2000, 69 percent of Michigan voters convincingly defeated a ballot proposal that would have allowed school vouchers.

Peko to start 'home' game

MSU junior defensive tackle Domata Peko's trip to Hawaii means a little bit more than it does to the rest of his teammates. The 6-foot-2, 297-pound junior college transfer is from Pago Pago, American Samoa.

Team heads to D.C. for tourney

Coming off a tough loss against No. 10 Duke, the No. 11 MSU men's basketball team will try to rebound against George Washington this weekend at the BB&T Classic. The Spartans (3-1) were on the road for the first time this season against Duke on Tuesday and will be playing this tournament at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C. "It is a scary feeling to have to start the tournament off against a team as solid as Michigan State," George Washington head coach Karl Hobbs said. George Washington (3-1) will co-host the tournament with Maryland for the 10th time.

Angels will be popping up all over town as the East Lansing UAW Non-Supervisory employees begin a campaign to benefit a local shelter and advocacy center. Jason White Senior quarterback, Oklahoma White's stay as the resident Heisman favorite was wiped out by Southern Cal quarterback Matt Leinart's stunning performance against Notre Dame last weekend. It seems the national media that crowned White the favorite has betrayed him and fallen in love with a new quarterback.

Anorexia shouldn't face insensitivity

I'm writing in response to Lindsey K. Anderson's column on jeans sizes and self-esteem ("Jean sizes put weight on esteem" SN 12/1). I agree with most of what she said in her column. There is certainly an excessive amount of pressure being put on people, especially women, to be a certain size.

$1.5 M grant awarded for new professor

A $1.5 million grant will fund the Osteopathic Heritage Professor, a new professorship in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. The grant, from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations, will help create an endowed chairperson position, focused on biomedical research.

Residents of the Cedar Village area gained national recognition for a reputation of destruction. The land itself slowly decayed. Now, officials say they are ready to restore the prime piece of real estate and create a promising future for the notorious site. Some predict it will take 10 to 15 years to rejuvenate the Cedar Village area, while others say it will never happen.

Erbe retires as coach after 12 years with 'U'

Chuck Erbe has stepped down as head coach of the MSU volleyball team, announcing his retirement after 12 seasons at MSU. Erbe said he plans on spending more time with his family after being involved in volleyball for the past 35 years. "The last few years have been taking a toll on me personally," Erbe said.

RHA to dump recycling

The Residence Halls Association will eliminate its campus recycling program at the end of the spring semester, after a unanimous vote on Wednesday. It is not known who would pick up the recycling responsibility, and some students say they're concerned about its continuation.
