Mich. unemployment rate among worst in country

A low unemployment rate can be unsettling to many soon-to-be graduates as they prepare to enter the workforce. Michigan's unemployment rate was one of the worst in the nation in December, at 7.3 percent. The state tied with Alaska and was second only to the District of Columbia, with an unemployment rate of 9.0. The statistic has some graduating seniors, who are beginning their quests for steady salaries, adjusting their education to create better opportunities. "I am a little nervous," said criminal justice senior Erin Randall.

MSU lacks comprehensive tailgate recycling program

With about 400 cubic yards of waste left on campus after every football Saturday, there is enough to completely cover the field at Spartan Stadium in 3 feet of trash in less than two seasons. While some universities have tailgating recycling programs, MSU has limited abilities to create a program. Only 1-2 percent of all waste from tailgating is recycled, said Pete Pasterz, MSU Recycling and Waste Reduction manager. The only recycling that occurs on game day is for vendor's boxes inside the stadium, Pasterz said.

Phone use slows reactions

Students who talk on their cell phones while driving react just as slowly as elderly citizens and increase their risk of accidents, according to a recently released report from the University of Utah. David Strayer, author of the study and University of Utah psychology professor, said a 20-year-old on a cell phone tends to have the same reaction time as a 70-year-old who is not on the phone. "In fact, younger people are more at risk because they drive too close to others," Strayer said.

MSU alumni to play in Super Bowl on Sunday

MSU will be well represented this weekend at the Super Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla., as three former Spartans are in the Sunshine State preparing for this weekend's battle. Labinjo spent his first 14 weeks with the Eagles on the practice squad, but was brought up to the active squad because of another player's injury mid-December.

'Movin' Out' bursts with energy, dance

In a stunning revolution of dance and visual effects, "Movin' Out" can only be described as a triumph for modern ballet. Thrust into a gray area between a classic musical and traditional dance, choreographer Twyla Tharp's creation is a breakthrough blend of the two genres. While Billy Joel's lyrics help to guide audience members through the plot, only the dancers' movements can clearly convey the character's complex emotions. And if a picture is worth a thousand words, then Tharp's choreography is worth a million. The production crosses boundaries by using popular lyrics in conjunction with classical ballet training and Cirque du Soleil-type acrobatics to create a new, rejuvenated ballet for mainstream America. "Movin' Out" is the story of five friends (Brenda, Eddie, James, Judy and Tony) at the end of high school.
