Editorial contained inaccurate details

The editorial, ("Stuck abroad" SN 1/13,) contained a significant number of factual errors that should be clarified and that may change the writer's perspective on the unfortunate incident of the MSU student who remained in Peru after her study abroad program concluded. All study abroad programs do have protocols for dealing with emergencies.

MIDDAY: MSU considers joining other Big Ten universities in open alcohol ban

As the MSU community begins to discuss prohibiting open alcohol on campus, university officials say a ban would align MSU with other campuses around the state and in the Big Ten. "Other institutions have decided what is appropriate for their academic communities, and we should do the same," MSU spokesman Terry Denbow said. Some of the policies have been in place for more than two decades, and all of the Big Ten universities, except MSU, forbid the open consumption of alcohol in public areas. Trustees focus on open discussion at first meeting

MSU President Lou Anna Simon led the MSU Board of Trustees for the first time in her presidency during the board's first meeting of the semester on Friday. It was also the first meeting for Trustee Melanie Foster, who was elected to the board in November after serving on the Central Michigan University Board of Trustees. As part of conducting the meetings, Simon said she would like to encourage open communication and discussion. By keeping the table open to discussion, it would allow for members of the MSU community to communicate issues they are working on to the entire board, Simon said. "I think that there's a way to have dialogue that is transparent, but at the same time be reflective of the institution," she said. Foster said returning to the board will allow her to contribute to the university's issues, such as the reorganization of the liberal arts college, which was discussed at the meeting. "I believe I had some good input," Foster said.

MIDDAY UPDATE: University trustees discuss banning open alcohol on campus

Some students and student government leaders say banning open alcohol on campus - as proposed by the MSU Board of Trustees on Friday - would not solve problems related to drinking and could restrict tailgating festivities. An ordinance proposed by the board would eliminate alcohol use in outdoor public areas on campus, such as outside residence halls or along the sidewalk. The proposal would grant exceptions for tailgating areas on football game days and other planned special occasions, MSU police Chief Jim Dunlap said.
